Animateurs 2005

Pilot ‘Animateurs’ within the framework of Yo! Opera Festival in Utrecht

‘Opera in the Bus’ was a large-scale community project and an unprecedented co-operation between professional opera makers, a bus company, school children, amateur singers, residents of different boroughs, etc. The project was based on the stories of six bus routes and destinations. It took up two full days of the festival (Sat 15 and Sun 16 October 2005)

With this community opera project Stichting Yo! has investigated what community opera can actually mean for young audiences, youth opera and opera education in the Netherlands. The lectorate has been involved in this research. The lectorate has assimilated "Opera in the bus" as a case study by looking into the significance of the project for the (professional) practice of the participating students and musicians. A number of vocal students of the Royal Conservatoire The Hague took part in the pilot "Animateurs" on bus 5 to Kanaleneiland. Watch the film on the right for an impression of the project.

Vocal students of the Royal Conservatoire The Hague took part in the pilot 'Animateurs' on bus 5 to Kanaleneiland. Bus 5 became the 'sing-along-bus', in which students invited the boarding audience to join in for a pleasant musical experience. Watch the film.

Approximately 20 vocal students took a day of training at the Royal Conservatoire on 22 September 2005. The day was lead by vocalist Nia Lynn. Four out of ten participants were selected to be animateurs on the bus during the 'Opera in the Bus' weekend. Jos Zandvliet (community musician; former Dogtroep) and Gerda van Zelm (vocal teacher at the RC and PCC) selected the 10 participants who worked together with Jos in October in preparation for the Bus-project. The four animateurs gave input for a curriculum for this kind of work (action research). The six singers who didn’t have an active role as animateur were present during the weekend and travelled along as passengers on the buses.

Results for the lectorate were: a (evaluative) case study (including the monitoring of the process) and a description of the skills for animateurs. The project has also broadened the professional development of the singers.

De Stichting Yo! (the Yo! During the third edition of the festival (from 12 to 16 October 2005 in Utrecht) there were special simultaneous festivals in two theaters, and also opera's on city buses, in a flat and on other surprising locations.

Opera on the Bus

Opera on the Bus was een big, two day community project, in which professional operamakers, a bus company, school children and amateur singers worked together. The Stichting Yo! wanted to research what (youth)opera and opera education can mean concretely for the young Dutch public. The lectorate Lifelong Learning in Music had a part in the research and also adopted the 'Opera on the Bus' project as a pilot in order to research the meaning of this project for the (professional) practice of the participating students and musicians.
