How can professional artists and musicians best be prepared so they can deal with the ever changing demands society puts on them? And how can they best be equipped to contribute actively to innovation? The Centre of Applied Research and Innovation Art & Society carries out research into the interaction between art and society and the ever changing professional practice of artists and musicians, because of this. The results of this research are used in the professional practice as well as in higher arts education.
The Centre of Applied Research and Innovation Art & Society consists of the professorships Lifelong Learning in Music & the Arts, Image in Context and Pop Culture, Sustainability & Innovation. The research centre comprises professorships which are connected to various disciplines within music and fine arts and the teacher training courses that accompany this. The ultimate objective is to provide material for the entire range of higher art education of the Hanze University. The research centre consciously aims to be more than the sum of its parts; the grouping of professorships has to result in added value to the contents of the results.
The professorship Lifelong Learning in Music & the Arts has been active since 2004, and is directed by Rineke Smilde, who is also leading lector of the Centre of Applied Research and Innovation Art & Society.
As of January 1 2011 the Executive Board appointed Mrs. Dr. Anne (A.M.M.) Nigten as professor for Pop Culture, Sustainability and Innovation at Minerva Academy, School for Fine Art, Design and Pop Culture, Centre of Applied Research and Innovation Art & Society. The professor of Image in Context is expected to be appointed in the course of 2011.
The professorships, also called research groups, each from their own perspective, carry out research into the knowledge, attitudes and skills professional artists should have to be able to function optimally in the professional practice. In addition, research will be done which has a more inclusive set up and concerns more disciplines, in which several professorships will participate. Starting point here is the exchange between art and society. We will look into which roles artists, musicians and teachers could play in this and how the different roles change in the professional practice. The results of this research are important for both the professional practice and for higher education in arts, design, music and pop culture.
Mission
The Centre of Applied Research and Innovation Arts & Society stimulates the creative and innovative role of the artist in society by contributing to the development of the professions in the arts. It does this by doing applied research into continuous innovation of the professional practice as a result of the interaction between art and society, and into the way professional artists can be equipped to function in an ever changing professional practice.
