Information and Communication Technology (ICT) contains a high level of innovation. Computers are getting faster, data storage is getting cheaper, the available broad-width of internet is improving, and many appliances contain computer chips that are more powerful than computers from ten years ago.
Furthermore ICT exists in all sorts of areas: the household, at work, in sports, in health care, and so on. Every Dutch citizen is confronted with ICT on a daily basis. This can be positive: think of user friendly household appliances such as televisions and microwaves, the safety and reliability of cars and the endless opportunities of the Internet. Despite this, there are also many down falls to this. For instance, the dependence on electricity, the concerns regarding privacy, and the complex IT systems such as the Dutch public transport chip card or the electronic patience file used in the health care industry.
Exciting Field of Work
The fast pace in which new techonologies develop as well as the vast application within all sorts of domains, makes ICT a very exciting field of work. It is however also a relatively young field of work that requires further development prior to it becoming a mature field of work. Within the School of ICT, the Professorship New Business & ICT focuses on the combination of ICT with entrepreneurship and with business. The Professorship studies the support that ICT can offer entrepreneurs with the realization of innovation and growth. The Professorship also studies the application of knowledge and expertise for successful market introductions of new ICT ideas and the growth of existing ICT companies. The Professorship New Business & ICT Works closely with the The Centre of Applied Research and Innovation – Entrepreneurship in supporting (starting) businesses.
The Professorship New Business & ICT is enabled by a.o. KPN.
