MFA Scenography
Mission and vision
Scenography – or filling in the space – is theatre design in the broadest sense of the word. The main focus is on deepening your knowledge and giving you the theoretical foundations of theatre space design. Over the last few decades, because the boundaries between artistic and cultural expression have blurred, the scope of theatre design has become far broader.
FMI Masters is the first and only educational institute in the Netherlands with a master's degree in scenography. The Academy Minerva, School for Fine Art, Design and Pop Culture/Academy Minerva, School of Fine Arts & Design also offers a preparatory route in the form of a bachelor's degree in Theatre Design. Not only is this combination of theatre concepts unique in the Netherlands, but we also have strong links with the profession, nationally and internationally, which demonstrates how extremely progressive we are at Hanze University Groningen.
With an MFA in scenography you can work as a designer in every possible spatial environment, from the traditional classical stage to visual site-specific theatres and virtual spaces. You will be an artist and designer who is capable of working both independently, and with your own individual vision as part of an artistic team, and you will have the ability to take the initiative, organise and lead. This means you will be able to take on any role that requires ideas for the design of a theatre space.
