Information start academic year 2012-2013

Welcome to the Hanze Institute of Technology and to the Advanced Sensor Applications Bachelor Programme. If you registered via studielink or if you contacted the International Student Office of the Hanze University, you will have received some information already. This is a summary of what you need to know when starting your programme in September 2012. The new school year will begin on Monday 3rd September, 2012 and we are looking forward to welcoming you to HIT.

Introduction week
For the new first year students we have planned a number of activities during introduction week, which will begin on Monday September 3, 2012. For the full (concept) programme click here. These activities will be both interesting and fun and will help you acquaint yourself with the school, people and surroundings. The new school year begins with a welcome day on Monday the 3rd September, 2012 at 09.00 am. You can report at the front desk at the HIT location (address: Industrieweg 34a, 9403 AB Assen) where you will receive further directions. During this first day you will learn more about the HIT, Hanze University and the Advanced Sensor Applications Bachelor Programme. During this week there will also be a visit to one of HIT’s partners.

Between Monday 3rd and Friday 9th September there will be a number of short assessments and workshops for all new students, covering the main disciplines, so we can ascertain your current level of knowledge. These assessments do not affect your admission into the Bachelor Programme.

  • Lectures for first year students begin on Monday September 10th at 13.00 am.
  • Lectures for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students start on Monday 3rd September, 2012

International Welcoming Day
If you are an international student, you will receive an invitation from the International Student Office of the Hanze University to attend the international welcoming day on Friday, the 31st of August, in the Atrium, Zernikepark, Groningen. Last September more than 700 international students attended this day and were introduced into Dutch Culture and Education. During this day a representative from the Dutch immigration authorities (IND) will be there to issue your visa and/or residence permit (if applicable). If you cannot make it to Groningen this day, we will give you directions during the introduction week on how to get to the IND by yourself to collect your visa and/or residence permit.

2nd Year assessment programme
If you have applied to enter the 2nd year (main phase) of the Bachelor directly, you will receive more information about the assessment programme shortly after the summer holidays.

Student housing
HIT works in cooperation with Actium, a housing association based in Assen. There are a number of rooms available for HIT students. If you require housing from Actium, please follow the instruction which you will find by clicking here. Please complete the application form and return it to Actium. Actium will then get back to you with various housing options and their monthly rent. A € 400,- deposit is required to rent a room.

Transfer service
If you are an international student arriving at Schiphol Airport and uncertain about finding your way to Assen you can apply for the Hanze University Pick-up Service via the International Student Office. Please check for the instructions here. A member of our Student Association can meet you at the Assen Railway station. If you want to make use of this Assen service, please contact the International Student Office, when applying for the Hanze Pick-up Service.

Intro camp
The first week’s programme ends with an introduction camp from Friday afternoon (September 7) to Sunday noon (September 9), organised by our Student Association (HIT Society) and based locally. You are obliged to attend the full programme. A comprehensive plan will be available soon. For this camp each student is requested to contribute € 75,-. This amount can be paid at the HIT front desk during the introduction week.

Following is a checklist of essential items which you should bring to the camp, in addition to personal items such as wash kit, towels (2x):

Personal finances
Our experience over the past years has taught us that it takes international students approximately four weeks to open a bank account at a Dutch bank. Please take enough cash with you or make other arrangements to help you get through the first month in Assen without having to access a Dutch bank account. The following list should give you an idea of the expenses you may encounter during your first month:
