Meet Marjolein
Marjolein Terhaard is a student of Artificial Intelligence in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. She is doing a research internship at CENSI: The Sun Center of Excellence for Intelligent Sensor Innovation, which is part of the Hanze Institute of Technology.

Handicapped mothers
Marjolein: “My project is about technical applications for the handicapped. I want to see what problems these people encounter and find technical solutions. I chose to focus on handicapped mothers. One of their common problems is that many practical things tend to go wrong. Carers often have to remind them of things, such as getting groceries or feeding the child. I am now working on a sensor system that reminds them of these tasks. The basic principle is that sensors are connected to different items in a kitchen. So you can easily see if the microwave was used, if certain cabinets were opened. If nothing happens, they could get a signal reminding them to perform a certain task.
 
Eye opener
“I like this field very much, as it’s very broad. Often there is a connection to other fields, for instance between health care and the technical side. I would like to continue in this field. It’s an eye opener how sensors can really help people. I am now working on the technical side, but before I did a lot of research about my target audience. I am learning which sensors to use and which items are most suitable.
People often think technical subjects are mostly for guys, but sensor technology is very interesting for girls. Its not just about technical issues, it also has a strong social dimension.

Studying in Assen 
“HIT students are assisted in finding a place to live in Assen. The HIT building is fantastic, airy and light.  Assen has nice shops, good bars and there is lots to do. I wanted to dance, skate and take music lessons. I can do all of that right here. It’s a safe, quiet town. But the busy city of Groningen is only 30 minutes away. I often attend the colloquia at HIT. There, I learned about cultural differences among other things. During these meetings I meet students, teachers and visiting lecturers from abroad. The international aspect is another appealing thing about HIT.”
