First Sensor City Challenge helps entrepreneurs in Assen

From 13 to 17 May, about 40 students compete to win the first Sensor City Challenge. The Sensor City Challenge is a competition for students at HIT/Hanze University. In only five days they have to come up with new sensor applications that can be used by entrepreneurs or the municipality of Assen.

CS Vincent van Goghs' VWO team wins HIT Challenge

Vwo pupils of CS Vincent van Gogh in Assen have won the HIT Challenge this year. Jelle Wichers, Kenneth Muller, Cor Steging and Jeroen Maat made an iPhone app to control the lights, locks and temerature in their house. In the jury were representatives of Philips, TNO and the Hanze Institute of Technology. The winning team members all received a Natural wake up light from Philips.

Regiofinale First Lego League tijdens Open Dag Sensortechnologie bij HIT

Groningen, 20 november 2012 – Op zaterdag 24 november houdt het Hanze Institute of Technology (HIT) in Assen tussen 11.00 en 15.00 uur een Open Dag. Tijdens de Open Dag zijn er volop activiteiten over de toepassing van sensortechnologie in de industrie, gezondheidszorg, landbouw, product design, verkeer en astronomie. Daarnaast vindt de regiofinale van de First Lego League HIT plaats en valt er te zien hoe robots van scholierenteams het tegen elkaar opnemen.

Inschrijving ontwerpwedstrijd sensorhuis als alternatief voor profielwerkstuk sluit op 21 september

Morgen, 21 september 2012, is de laatste dag dat groepen leerlingen van het middelbaar onderwijs zich kunnen inschrijven voor de HIT Challenge. Dit is een ontwerpwedstrijd waaraan eindexamenleerlingen in groepjes een zogenaamd 'slim huis' ontwerpen.

Outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Uri Rosenthal, visited the Hanze Institute of Technology and Sensor Universe on Monday September 3, 2012. He was informed on how the sensor cluster in Drenthe and the North of the Netherlands develops.

HIT students find a way to navigate inside buildings

Joost Zuidema and Bram Fokkens, students Advanced Sensor Applications at the Hanze Institute of Technology, developed a  navigation system that can help police and emergency personnel. They've built an affordable system that enables the leader of the team to track their personnel inside buildings. With minor adjustments, it can also be suitable for the fire department.

The Honours Programme: the students' stories

The Advanced Sensor Applications (Honours) Bachelor became an Honours Programme in September 2010. HIT’s Honours Programme is part of the wider Hanze Honours College, whereby 0.5% of talented Hanze University students are able to join honours programmes, by undertaking additional assignments. HIT is well-known for its excellent level of education and student satisfaction. This, in turn, means HIT holds a prestigious and unique position within the Hanze University Groningen, as all HIT’s bachelor students are honours students. To fulfil the honours status, students must complete three additional assignments alongside the regular curriculum. These assignments create a platform for students to demonstrate organisational, leadership and community skills.

Exciting innovations at the Honours Design Challenge
5 November 2011, Groningen - Today marks the end of the Honours Design Challenge (HDC), a design competition driven by innovation and part of the Honours Programme of the Hanze Hogeschool Groningen. Teams of talented, multidisciplinary honours students will present innovative gesture recognition applications they have developed to visitors of the Hanzehogeschool open day. A panel of industry judges ranging from marketing experts to technical innovation specialists, will decide which team has the best product, presentation and design process.

HIT students measure climate with sensors in greenhouse from Priva
Students from the bachelor programme Advanced Sensor Applications are going to measure temperature, humidity and CO2 in a greenhouse. Priva has provided this greenhouse so students can determine whether the conditions are optimal for the plants in it.

Team CS Vincent van Gogh wins HIT Challenge

Team 1 from the Vincent van Gogh School in Assen has won the first HIT Challenge. Known as a 'profielwerkstuk' in The Netherlands, the HIT Challenge is a project from the Hanze Institute of Technology that replaces the final paper for vwo and havo students. The Assen based HIT is part of the Hanze University Groningen, University of Applied Sciences.

Best 'HBO Elektrotechniek' Bachelor Programme in the Netherlands: Advanced Sensor Applications in Assen
HIT's Advanced Sensor Applications (ASA) Bachelor Programme has been ranked Number One in the Keuzegids HBO Voltijd 2011 in the study category 'Elektrotechniek' (Electrical Engineering). Furthermore, of the 22 nationwide programmes that have been awarded an 'excellent' status within the guide, HIT is rated 4th. This coincides perfectly with the HIT Honours programme.

At the 27th November the Hanze Institute of Technology is hosting the regional finals of the First Lego League of the North of the Netherlands. 24 teams have registered and each team consists of up to 10 children in the age of 9-14 years.

50 technology degree students from the Advanced Sensor Applications Honours Bachelor visited to the NAM in Assen recently. The NAM stands for ‘Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij’, which means Dutch Oil Company. The students discovered how the NAM applies sensor technology.

Fascinating experiments of Hanze University Groningen during Noorderzon festival!

The Hanze Institute of Technology, one of the schools of Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, has brought sensor technology to Noorderzon, with a variety of interactive equipment and games. Visitors to Qu3 can soar above the clouds on the 'HIT Flycycle'. Sensors that monitor movement, speed and pressure are fixed to a stationary exercise bike. However, with a combination of peddle-power, Google Earth and some technical magic, visitors can take off from Groningen Aiport (Eelde) and fly through the skies above Groningen.

Dutch Sensor City Assen builds major sensor network
The city of Assen is going to build a major sensor network that will collect data to reduce noise and pollution. The sensor network can also be used for other projects, for instance to smoothen the traffic flow. The Dutch province of Drenthe and the city of Assen received a grant of 10.3 million Euros for this Sensor City project.

HIT cooperates with top Bulgarian mathematics school
Assen, 26 January 2010: The Hanze Institute of Technology (HIT) has signed a cooperation agreement (Memorandum of Understanding) with Paisii Hilendarski; the top mathematics school in the Bulgarian capital city of Sofia. The cooperation between the two educational institutes has led to the creation of a tailor-made assessment programme.

Noorden kan uitgroeien tot wereldwijd leidende regio op het gebied van sensor technologie
De mogelijkheden van de sensor technologie zullen in de toekomst alleen maar toenemen. Sensor systemen worden steeds intelligenter. Menselijke trekken als intuïtie en emotie zal de technologie nooit krijgen, maar dankzij steeds betere en snellere sensoren komen we daar wel heel dicht bij in de buurt. Het zal de maatschappij ingrijpend veranderen. En met de hoeveelheid informatie die dankzij de sensoren op ons afkomt, worden weer nieuwe ontwikkelingen in gang gezet die als een enorme sneeuwbal voort zullen rollen. Samenwerkingsverband Noord-Nederland invests in the Hanze Institute of Technology
Groningen, 30 September 2009 – In cooperation with the Municipality of Assen, the Province of Drenthe and the Hanzehogeschool Groningen, Samenwerkingsverband Noord-Nederland (SNN) has become an investor in the Hanze Institute of Technology (HIT). On September 18, 2009, the SNN made the decision to subsidise (€ 668.912) the sensor technology-inspired educational programme and (€ 402.065) the research facility at HIT.

HIT students and the IJkdijk Foundation perform research in sensor applications
The Hanze Institute of Technology (HIT) and the IJkdijk Foundation – a unique test facility for the development of intelligent dam monitoring systems – will begin an education partnership in researching sensor networks in dams.  Together they will examine innovative ways of monitoring the state of a dam and develop more efficient ways of process measurement data. On September 3rd, representatives of HIT and the IJkdijk Foundation signed the cooperation agreement.
