Historical Keyboards

The North Netherlands is famous for its vast wealth of historical organs. The Master Organ at the Prins Claus Conservatorium makes use of the great range of organs on offer, many of which have been perfectly restored. The historical performance practice (in the broadest sense of the term) therefore also plays an important role. The principal study lessons take place on location making weekly use of the organs of the Martini church (III/P Arp Schnitger 1692 and older) and the Grote or Jacobijner church in Leeuwarden (III/P Christian Müller 1727). Organ excursions, organ trips and class concerts on historical instruments also make up part of the programme.  The teachers are Theo JellemaErwin Wiersinga and Wolfgang Zerer (regular guest teacher).

Claviorganum

Within the Master Organ you can choose for the profile Claviorganum, a study programme on the historical keyboard instruments or: organ, harpsichord and clavichord. This profile deals with repertoire composed before 1800. Within the study programme repertoire playing, basso continuo playing and improvisation will be worked on. The Master student will also work on theoretical primary source research and organology, the study of history, build and stylistic characteristics of the North Netherlands organ up to and including the early 19th century. A unique part of the Master Claviorganum is one compulsory semester of study at Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, with teachers Wolfgang Zerer, Pieter van Dijk en Menno van Delft.

Teachers in Groningen are Johan Hofmann, Theo Jellema and Erwin Wiersinga.
