Mission and view on education
The School of Communication & Media aims to train enterprising, socially responsible, and internationally-oriented professionals for employment in the field of communication, information and media. It also aims to contribute to the circulation of knowledge and innovation at an (inter)national level. This is the driving force behind all of the school's activities.
The school works to create a professional context in which students can develop the competencies needed for their future profession. The school's view on education reflects it's mission and its values. This view includes:
- Learning is a process of competency-development
- Professional tasks play a central role
- There is direct communication between the school and the professional field
- Students learn individually and in groups
Professional tasks, direct communication with the professional field
The premise of the school's educational philosophy is that the acquisition of knowledge and skills are interdependent. Students are place in a professional context where complex competencies are acquired and tested. This means that an adequate application of knowledge and skills is necessary. Apart from general bachelor competencies every bachelor at our school has its own professional competencies, which have been formulated in cooperation with the professional field. The educational format of the school revolves around complex (international) professional tasks, which are important to (junior) professionals. Theory classes, skills training and workshops create a basis from which students can draw in order to complete their professional tasks during internships, graduation assignments, projects, professional cases, and excursions.
Modern facilities
Our school is located at the Zernike Campus, which is just a ten-minute bus ride from Groningen city centre.
We have training and tutorial rooms, computer rooms, an innovation lab, film and photo studios, silent workplaces, student workplaces for group work or individual work and workstations.

A diverse atmosphere and many opportunities
Walking through our school, you will not fail to notice the relaxed and informal atmosphere. Our experienced lecturers are easily accessible and will teach you how things work in practice. We regularly invite guest lecturers who will enlighten you on a specialist subject. And if you are an International Communication Bachelor student and would like to expand your horizons, you will have elective credits to use as you please. You can, for example, gain experience abroad through our excellent contacts with international partners. In addition, you will have the opportunity to do an internship and graduation assignment anywhere in the world.
Academic counselling
All of our students have their own academic counsellor, who is both coach and personal mentor. Your
academic counsellor is your first point of contact if you have questions or concerns. He/she supports you in compiling your personal development plan and study agreement. By drawing up these plans with the support of your academic counsellor, it will be clear what you can expect from the school, and what the school can expect from you!
Career opportunities in International Communication
Your studies in international and intercultural communication will prepare you for an international
career in public relations, corporate communication or public affairs in both the public and private sectors.
On graduation you will have developed a broad understanding of international communication and the basic skills needed for a starting position in a wide range of international careers.
Are you fascinated by other cultures and how people communicate? Are you creative and enterprising? Do
