Introduction to Intercultural Communication

This period will introduce you to a number of the main concepts, issues and skills in the field of international communication. We focus on communication through various media channels and the role of senders and receivers in communication.

Professional Orientation

So what does a communication professional actually do? Having a hard time answering this question when your friends ask? During this period you will visit and interview communication professionals about their responsibilities. After researching the organisations they work for, you will set up a meeting with at least four professionals. What kind of personal traits do you need in order to be successful? What does a day look like?

Media and the Money

In this period we will focus our attention on issues relevant to the media and economic factors influencing an organisation. Changes in the environment influence the organisation. As a communication professional you need to be alert. You will need to monitor current events and trends. The various media available are an invaluable source of information. You need to know how to make use of these channels for the implementation of the communication policy of your organisation.

The Event

During the final project of the first year you will create an event, together with your project team. You will be presented with a problem that has a start and finish to it. The events can vary from a one-time event to starting up a series of events or providing a service. Project teams will write project plans and event plans, including a budget.
