Choosing for teamwork
If you choose for a career in dental hygiene, you choose for variation. You help a variety of patients, with specific problems. Sometimes only concerning their teeth, sometimes this will only be part of the story. Many of your patients are insecure and sometimes even anxious: not everybody, for instance, looks forward to tartar removal.
||With tact, care, and sometimes perseverance you supply your patients with a healthy, fresh mouth. Your results come quick, in a few months’ time problem teeth may change for the better substantially.
If you choose to go for a bachelor degree in Groningen, at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, you will learn how to function independently in a close-knit, professional team. Because of recent developments in society dentists and orthodontists increasingly depend on the skills of professional oral hygienists.
|Feeling for your profession
Apart from knowledge you should also have feeling for your profession; you don’t work with mouths but with people. Insight into human nature is indispensable.
And besides that patient in your chair, you daily have to deal with dentists, colleague dental hygienists and dental assistants. Good communication skills are the key to success!
You may work in a group practice, but also in a specialized practice for paradontology (gums problems) or orthodontics (brace dentist), hospitals, health care institutions, public health care or a commercial business. In the Netherlands it is also possible to have your own independent practice.
The world of dental care is continuously changing. So it goes without saying that we also teach you how to keep up with new developments, how to learn, use and teach new techniques and technology.
