Alannah Colgan
Law student from Ireland
‘It was a great opportunity’

Why have you chosen to study International Law?

I study at the LYIT in Ireland and thought it was a great opportunity to see a new place and to learn about International Law, in particular European Union Law.

What did you learn from it, so far? And what do expect to have learned at the end of the semester?

I have learned so much, it is pretty amazing the amount of work I have covered so far. I have learned all about the EU and the institutions that make up the EU, the Four Fundamental Freedoms, International Contract law, Child labor law, Human rights and also Intellectual Property law. By the end of this semester I hope to have a good knowledge of International law.

Do you have Extracurricular activities besides your study?

Here at the Hanzehogeschool I do not have Extracurricular activities besides my study. The study takes up a lot of time and I also want to have time for sightseeing! In Ireland I do a lot of extracurricular activities (martial arts, yoga, and also walking)…

What do you think of Groningen?

I really enjoy walking, checking out new places in Groningen and getting snap shots with my camera. And  as most students I would like to go out at night in the center of Groningen.

What is your future goal in relation to your international ambitions?

Good question, I am not 100% sure yet what area I am heading towards. My plan for the moment is to see where the road takes me…as well as to enjoy the road while it is taking me there….

Diana Maggi
Law  student from Italy
‘Expanding my horizon’

Why have you chosen to study International Law?
I have chosen to study International Law because I am interested in European legislation.

What did you learn from it, so far? And what do expect to have learned at the end of the semester?
So far I have really improved my oral and written English skills and I have learned some of the European Law and I enjoyed cooperative learning.

Do you have Extracurricular activities besides your study?
I am very busy attending ACLO sport training and I also attend international students activities such as dinners, parties and excursions.

What is your future goal in relation to your international ambitions?
I would like to graduate in Law in Italy as soon as possible. After that I will look for a job, maybe abroad.
Jorien Heuker
Law student from The Netherlands
‘Learning more about European and International Law’

Why have you chosen to study International Law?
I was studying law for 3 years already. That was, however, only about the Dutch law. I wanted to know more about other laws as well. To see the difference and to learn about the rules of the European Union.

What did you learn from it, so far? And what do expect to have learned at the end of the semester?
Although it says International Law, it is until now, only European law. So I learned a lot about that! About the rules which apply, like contract law and freedom of workers. I like the freedom of workers especially. There is a lot of abuse of workers in the EU, and now I know more about it, I can maybe someday help them.
At the end of the semester I hope to know a lot about European law, and to have learned a little about international law.

Do you have Extracurricular activities besides your study?
I am the student assistant for the International Law programme, which consists of gathering information, helping out exchange students en organizing excursions.

Share your Talent, Move the World’ is the name of the new campaign of the Hanze University. This is why, we would like to know…….. Are you a socially responsible person concerned with improving society or creating a better world? Do you like to be of assistance to others? All this in relation to your study programme.
For example, as a student assistant I helped to plan a excursion to Bremen Hochschule. When students want to know something, they can come to me and I can help them. And not only as a student assistant, but in other things as well I like to be of assistance to others.
Next year I hope to do my internship somewhere where I can really help people which are in greet need and eventually improve society. I would like to focus on the abuse of women and children in poor countries.

What is your future goal in relation to your international ambitions?
I really don’t know yet! After this study I want to study Criminology and after that…

Graduated Law student
‘To communicate in English was the most outstanding feature’

Why have you chosen to study International Law?

To begin with, I like the fact that you can study a different language for one semester. By doing this you can learn proper business English and learn some aspects of the international law at the same time. For example: international business law, free movement of goods and capital, international employment/ contract law and intellectual property rights.
This minor also attracts some students (hopefully more and more over the time) from foreign countries. So it is possible you will be doing your ‘projects’ with Danish, English and Latvian students! In my year there were some students from England, Latvia and Estonia. It was all great fun with these foreign students.

What did you learn from it?

The courses given are very well balanced, and go very well with the project you have to do for this minor. This minor consists of two periods, where you will be learning all of the above mentioned courses. But the most outstanding feature I’ve learned from this course is to communicate in (business) English. In written and verbally. You will learn this very easily by doing the projects, courses and the exchange project. Oh, I almost forgot that one. In my semester there was an exchange project with ‘the Germans’ in Bremen. In the first half of the semester we went to Bremen to do some courses, learn something about the German law system and off course have a nice drink . In the second half they came to Groningen to do, mainly the same thing. But we’ve all had a great laugh.

What is your future goal?

My future goal has changed after having done this Minor. I first wanted to do something with Dutch government-law. But the international law does interests me. And therefore I would like to do something with for example international trade or business law. But before I will do this, I’m going to study an international law study at the University of Groningen (after I get my law degree here).
