The Centre for Languages & Cultures is part of the School of Marketing Management. The Centre offers a wide range of modules in modern languages, cross-cultural communication and cultural studies. The modules are open to all students of Hanze University Groningen, including visiting exchange students. The Centre also offers special courses for Hanze University lecturers and other staff members that want to improve their foreign language proficiency and/or their cross-cultural communication skills.
The Centre offers language modules of 3 EC in a variety of languages at 5 different levels. The levels are described in terms of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Within this Framework there are 6 levels, indicated as A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2, each subdivided in two levels. The lowest level is A1, which you reach after about 80 hours of study, starting at zero level. C2 is the highest level, the near native level, which requires intensive language study over a longer period. The rule of thumb is that the time required to get to a higher level doubles with each level. So it takes about 80 hours to get from zero to level A1, but it takes about 160 hours to get from level A1 to level A2, and about 320 hours to get from A2 to B1, etc.
The language of instruction is in principle the language that you are learning. A language module will only be scheduled when sufficient students have enrolled.
