As a prospective international student you are on the doorstep of a great adventure, studying and living in the Netherlands.


Housing
It can be difficult to find a room in Groningen. But not impossible! Please keep in mind that the earlier you start searching for a room the more chance you have to find one. Our advice is to start at least 3 months before you come to Groningen.

Food culture

The Dutch food culture may not be what you are used to at home. For instance: it is typical Dutch to eat bread (prepared at home) during lunch and have a hot meal in the evening between 6 and 8 PM. The catering in Hanze UAS therefore offers mostly snacks, drinks and sandwiches during lunch hour.

Health Care and Insurance
You may not reside in the Netherlands - not even temporarily - if you do not have a liability and medical insurance that meets Dutch standards. The Netherlands has a high standard of medical care, but medical costs can be high. Therefore it is important to be properly insured.

Registration as a citizen of Groningen
All students staying in the Netherlands for four months or longer must register as a citizen of Groningen with City Hall.

Bank Account

The easiest way to pay your bills is to open a bank account in The Netherlands. When you have a Dutch bank account you will receive a bank card with a Personal Identification Number with which you can pay at any shop or store in the Netherlands.
