Professional field of nursing specialist
The Advanced Nursing Practice Master diploma allows nurses to get a position as a nursing specialist that traditionally is not part of the professional opportunities of nurses. Nursing specialists will be authorized, as so called article 14 professionals under the Individual Health Care Professions Act (Wet BIG), to perform certain reserved actions, such as prescribing drugs. One can start working for instance in university medical centres, in general hospitals, in general practitioning, in nursing homes, and in institutions for public health care, mental disability care or mental health care institutions. These nursing specialists, thus diagnose and treat patients with a large variety of health problems.
Nursing specialists:
- Enter into independent treatment relationships with patients act as (co-) practitioners
- Have specific fields of expertise in which independent decisions are made about interventions to be carried out
- Make diagnoses within personal fields of expertise
- Set up treatments within personal fields of expertise that may include indicating reserved actions and drug treatment
- Perform this treatment personally within personal fields of expertise or assign others to do this
- End treatment within personal fields of expertise
- Refer patients within personal fields of expertise and/or consult other disciplines. Other disciplines can refer directly to nursing specialists.
