The School of Sport Studies is one of the Schools of Hanze University Groningen. Physical Education Teacher Training (Lerarenopleiding Lichamelijke Opvoeding, ALO) and the Sport, Health and Management programme (Sport, Gezondheid en Management, SGM) at Hanze University Groningen are part of this institute. Studying at the School of Sport Studies means studying a combination of practice and theory. The students, approximately 1500, come in contact with as many different professional areas as possible from day one by working during their studies on assignments which have a professional focus. This allows students to develop a good idea of what is involved in professional practice during their studies. Examples of assignments, which we refer to as professional products are a lesson plan, a marketing plan or making a health test. Both knowledge and experience are required in order to complete a professional product. These necessary competencies and expertise are presented during lessons and practical work, so students are properly prepared for the assignments.
As students are coming in direct contact with the professional world, they also need to have the right attitude (professional approach). We refer to the combination of skills, knowledge and attitude needed to produce a professional product as a competency. In order to become a good professional it is therefore important that students develop those competencies, which will be needed later to exercise their profession properly.
Structure of the School of Sport Studies
The School of Sport Studies offers two programmes which start with a common foundation year (propedeuse). All first-year ALO and SGM students therefore follow the same programme. The propedeuse is primarily concerned with orientation, selection and (self-directed) learning. The advantage of the common propedeuse is that students are able to develop an accurate idea of the direction they want to follow at a later stage. Following the propedeuse where students have gained a broad professional overview, the students choose one of the major programmes from Sport Development, Sport Management or Sport and Health. Later on in the programme the students select one from a large number of minors or specialisations which appeals to them or which may expand or elaborate their education. Examples of these are: Outdoor Management, Physical Education for children with special needs.
We refer to the instance where students encounter something they do not know as an educational/professional problem, where solutions have to be found. The lecturers help through lectures, practicals and assignments. The core of these programmes is that students learn from practice, which is why we do not refer to this as practicals (stage), but as work placements.
During the majors programme students undertake practical work experience. In the practical work students are involved in tasks related to their profession. For instance, for the Sport Development major this involves the preparation, implementation and subsequent evaluation of sports activities. The practical work allows students to discover whether they already have certain competencies or whether they already know quite a lot about teaching.
During every study year several curriculum items are offered in English. International students have the opportunity to participate. A system of personal guidance enables international students to follow parts of the programmes taught in Dutch.
