This study focuses on the protection of intrinsic elements in the landscape of the Wadden area by legal instruments. This research therefore, is within the area of environmental law and is a comparative law study focusing on the Wadden area in its totality from Esbjerg (DK) to Den Helder (NL). After the geographical area of the Wadden area is delineated and the intrinsic values of the area are defined, this research focuses on international and European law. The central question which arises then is, what obligations from international and European law have been imposed on Member States, and in particular on Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands, and how these commitments have been implemented into national law. In this way the question can be answered, if the three national legal systems in their implementation comply with international and European law and if omissions can be found in the implementation of these obligations. Then the national law systems, as far as applicable for this research, will be compared with each other. At last the question can be answered if the three national law systems comply with each other and with international and European law and if discrepancies can be found. This research will be rounded off with conclusions and recommendations with regard to a facilitating legal system suitable for the protection of intrinsic values in the landscape of the Wadden area in the Northwestern part of Europe.
