Will globalisation lead to a race to the bottom?
Employee relations in international companies

Johan de Jong Msc (PhD-candidate)
Dr. Frank Jan de Graaf

Date / Time: March 13, 14.30 -16.00 hrs
Location: Cultural Café De CAST, Zernikeplein 7, Groningen

Within the KCO lecture, Johan de Jong – lecturer at IBL – will discuss his research on how Dutch companies export their Human Resource (HR) practices to emerging economies like Poland and Estonia. Are Dutch HR practices a competitive advantage, or will more international trade lead to a race to the bottom, diminishing labour standards?

Special attention will be paid to the question whether the owner-manager’s values regarding role and position of employees affect employees’ commitment and loyalty and, in turn, their effect on the company’s competitive position.

This research has been carried among Dutch multinational SMEs with a subsidiary in Poland or Estonia.

Also, Frank Jan de Graaf, professor International Business, will give some more insight on the research programme on International Business within the Centre of Applied Research and Innovation - Entrepreneurship. Does Northern Europe, as a region, have a competitive advantage?
