WireLess + More
Background
Gauteng Link is a collaborative undertaking in the Gauteng Province in South Africa, near Johannesburg, which will deliver broadband (at speeds of 1-4 Mbps) and applications to 95% of the approximately 10 million Gauteng households, and a globally competitive rich-media broadband connection (5-20 Mbps) to 10% of Gauteng households and to centres identified in the Priority 20 Township project. This will be achieved while still offering the service at a globally competitive, market transforming price to customers.
This vision aims to:
· Provide: public, private and non-governmental organisations with an innovative broadband platform.
· Embrace: under-serviced and entrepreneurial communities.
· Orchestrate: government, private sector and non-governmental organisation (NGO) assets, resources and capabilities.
· Propagate: the Network Virtual Orchestration (NVO) incubation process nationally.
· Learn: what the needs of communities are, and continually evolve to better serve these communities.
· Excite: public and private investment through investor-grade business models.
The following objectives have been formulated:
· Digital Inclusion: Affordable broadband access for everyone, including marginalised and outlying communities.
· Social Inclusion: Incubate the broadband infrastructure of the Gauteng Global City Region as a model for national replication.
· Service Delivery: Facilitate more efficient and effective government and business.
Aim of the WireLess + More project
The project aims at the development of a multitude of Wireless Broadband Applications (particularly in the field of e- Government) by students of Hanze University of Applied Science in close co-operation with colleagues at Gauteng Link and with interested members of the INEC international network of e-communities. This alliance between Hanze University Groningen, University of Applied Sciences and INEC offers opportunities and possibilities for students seeking a challenging and exciting environment for their internships and graduation projects in a `real life' project at a scale unheard of in the Netherlands.
What are we looking for?
The first phase of the project will start in February 2010 and will last to July 2010. Activities can take place either in The Netherlands or in South Africa and will all be aimed at covering all aspects of the design, development, test, implementation and evaluation of ‘state of the art’ applications for the G-Link project.
Only a maximum of 7 students will be selected to join this project. A selection process will follow shortly after the closing of the registration period. This selected group of students will be offered an interesting package of support, consisting of:
· Housing
· Mentoring and personal coaching
· Allowance to cover the cost of living
Students from a variety of educational programs are invited to react, to be specific:
· ICT

· Human Technology
· Hanze Institute of Technology
· Economics, marketing and finance
· International Business
· Arts
· Sports
