ZAP and collaborations

At ZAP Groningen, education, research and innovation converge in practice. Therefore, there is intensive collaboration with various parties, including knowledge institutions, users, and local communities in the fields of chemistry and technology.

Knowledge institutes

As an innovation hub, we facilitate projects by students, lecturers and researchers from Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the University of Groningen, and Noorderpoort. The University of Groningen and Noorderpoort are therefore important partners. We regularly collaborate with these knowledge institutes to develop new opportunities for students and lecturers.

Business community

Several companies from the region use ZAP's facilities to scale up innovative products and processes.

BioBTX

BioBTX produces BTX (benzene, toluene, and xylene) from non-food biomass and plastic waste. BTX are essential components for the production of high-quality materials, like new plastics.

Exxfire

Exxfire develops technology fire suppression technology for business-critical hardware, such as server racks and other electrical panels, and closed spaces, such as server and engine rooms.

BMI Icopal

BMI Icopal is a manufacturer of bitumen and PVC roofing. BMI Icopal is working on scaling up the process for extracting bitumen from biomass.

Photanol (completed)

Photanol uses cyanobacteria and sunlight to convert carbon dioxide into valuable chemical compounds that can be used in bioplastics, personal care, healthcare and fuel. Photanol studied the processes within this area at ZAP Groningen.

ZernikeZwam

ZernikeZwam uses coffee grounds from Zernike Campus to grow oyster mushrooms and create food products. These food products are then sold on Zernike Campus.

Communities

Chemport Europe

Chemport Europe brings together parties from the chemical industry to work on the green economy and make the sector future-proof. This aligns with the Eemsdelta industrial agenda and the goal of being CO2-neutral by 2050.

Campus Groningen

Campus Groningen brings together companies and institutions with a passion for research, education and entrepreneurship in one physical location to create impact together.

BERNN

BERNN is a partnership between the three northern universities of applied sciences (Hanze University of Applied Sciences, NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, and Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences) and the University of Groningen. BERNN's goal is to maintain and further expand its position in the Northern Netherlands within the biobased economy. Crucial to this is the region's ability to translate knowledge into industrial applications. ZAP Groningen plays a key role in this.
