Bologna Declaration and participation in EU programmes
In order to attune Western Balkan music academies to European educational and administrative standards at higher education level, knowledge and skills of academic and management staff concerning the various technical principles of the Bologna Declaration and related issues needed to be developed. Furthermore, international and European cooperation tools and methods needed to be developed with the aim to enhance the attractiveness of the academies to foreign students and to prepare participation in the EU programmes.

Regional centres of expertise
To widen participation in higher music education, the position of the academies needed to be further developed to turn them into regional centres of expertise for music education through an improved offer of continuing professional development for teachers. Furthermore, expertise in the area of pre-college training had to be developed through cooperation with institutions at pre-college training level in other European countries.

Counsellors Research group LLM to Sarajevo
At the request of the AEC, the research group Lifelong Learning in Music sent counsellors to the Music Academy of the University of Sarajevo. These counsellors visited the same academies four times over the project period to assist them with issues relevant to their development. In November 2009 Rineke Smilde and Evert Bisschop Boele visited the Music Academy in Sarajevo for the first time. The second visit took place in April 2010. Currently Rineke Smilde is still connected to the institute as a guest teacher of Lifelong Learning.
