Our former students now work as artistic professionals in very diverse settings. Rocking on stage. Marketing a product on the billboard behind you. Crafting a tattoo in that shop you always pass. Writing for that website you love. We do not just cater for the cultural elite; we cater for the people. The value of our work is decided by its success in finding an audience.

Programme overview

Work on your own project during your study

During your study, you have three roles: student, entrepreneur and artist. Set your goals as a student, develop your product as an artist, and find your market and network as an entrepreneur.

In the span of your four years at Minerva Academy of Popular Culture, you learn by doing projects. During your first year, the projects are partly pre-defined. In your final three years, though, how you learn is up to you. Together, we set our sights on the horizon and work in that direction. We actively collaborate to offer you challenges, support your needs and bring you closer to the professional practice. These collaborations are not formed in traditional classes but in labs and production houses, where you meet other creatives who help each other out with feedback and ideas. Every ten weeks, you complete a portfolio filled with your work as well as feedback from fellow students, teachers and experts. During an assessment, you present your portfolio to receive European Credits (EC).

Start your career right away

The amount of freedom you will experience means that you also need to be highly self-motivated. In other words, you are responsible for your own success. You develop your craft, learn how to be self-reliant and train the skills necessary to run your own project from start to finish, solo or with fellow students and professionals. Your network grows as you meet insiders from all industries. While your career starts within the walls of the Academy, you will be well on your way out of our 'clubhouse' before you are done.

Our coaches are experienced professionals who run a business as well as teach, which blurs the boundaries between education and profession as much as possible.

Internships

In your third year, you find an internship that fits your ambition and goals. For the course of one semester, you work in the industry under the guidance of professionals. Some examples of previous internship providers include Wisseloord Studios, national festivals such as Pinkpop, Paradiso Amsterdam, Idols and various music stages across the Netherlands. You can focus on playing in a band, creating video clips, organising a festival, doing marketing, finances or stage presentation, and creating artistic concepts, among many other things.

Minors

Minors

During your bachelor you can choose a minor. For instance, the minor Art & Technology. You will work with other students in an interdisciplinary project focused on art, technology and sustainability.

You can also choose to do a minor Popular Culture (taught in Dutch) or a minor International Popular Culture (taught in English). Both minors are taught in Leeuwarden at Minerva Academy of Popular Culture

International focus

Your study offers lots of opportunities to go abroad and meet students from other countries. We have exchange programmes with a list of countries including Finland, Hungary and Great Britain. There are possibilities for internships abroad and international minors.

Graduation

In the final semester of your study, you focus on graduating. You work towards a performance for a wide audience. How you create and present the concept and final product is totally up to you. You are the artistic leader and you show that you are ready to start working as a professional. During this process, you conduct artistic research under the guidance of your coaches and you ask for feedback from the professional field.

After graduation

Career opportunities

After your graduation you can work as a professional in the creative industry. Als entrepeneur or musician. As theatremaker or designer. You are fully prepared to work in the international field of popular culture.
