Here you can download the motivation letter requirements

Note: for the study programme Vocals Jazz we have a pre-selection. When you fill in your application you are also required to send a youtube/soundcloud/MP3/video link. From all the applications 10 to 14 candidates will be selected for the entrance exam.

Digital entrance exam

In some cases it is possible to do the entrance exam by skype.
Here you can find the regulations for a digital entrance exam.

The day of the entrance exam

You will receive the invitation for your entrance exam by mail. At the day of the entrance exam you can make yourself known at the information desk one hour before your exam. Here you will be told where the theory and practical exam will take place. Normally you first do the theoretical exam and then the practical exam. Sometimes it is not possible to schedule both exams on one day, so please read the invitation carefully, date and time are mentioned in the invitation.

Theory exam

The duration of the theory test is approximately 1 hour.
Click here for an example of the theory test.

Rehearsal time

When you chose for accompaniment by the conservatoire you will have 20 to 30 minutes to rehearse with the combo. Only when sheet music was send 2 weeks before the exam.

Practical exam

The duration of the practical exam is approximately 30 minutes and consists of 3 parts:

Instrumental skills
1. Playing or singing 2-3 pieces of the jazz standards repertoire, chosen to show variaty in style and tempo. You have to show skills in playing a melody, acoompaniment of the other players and improvising (playing solo).

2. It is a bonus if you can play a classical piece as well

3. We advise to also show the committee other musical skills, like playing a second instrument, composing/arranging skills or a self written composition (not more than 1). In this case bring sheet music of the originals.

4. All non-pianist will be asked to play a few scales and simple chords on the piano

Scales and chords
Candidates need to play:

Scales: Ascending and descending, major, minor, melodic minor in all modes
Chords: Ascending and descending triads in major, minor, diminished, augmented and sus-4 and the tetrads major 7, minor 7, dominant 7 and diminished 7.

Sight reading skills
Playing a prima vista of easy bigband or ensemble parts written in traditional notation and chord symbols.

Result of the exam

Right after the entrance exam the committee will let you know if your level of playing is sufficient. If your level is sufficient you will be placed on the waiting list.  After all the entrance exam for your instrument are finished the committee will decide who will be admitted to the Prince Claus Conservatoire. Candidates who are accepted will be informed about this by phone or e-mail and will be asked if they accept the admission. It is of great importance that you answer this questions as soon as possible. Candidates who are not immediately admitted will be informed about this and will stay on the waiting list.
All the candidates receive an official letter with the result of their exam in the beginning of July.

Extended theory test

When you are admitted to the programme you will have to do a theory level test in the first week of the school year. The result of this test will be used to determine in which theory group you will be scheduled. In case you already did a bachelor (or part of it) there is also a possibility to do a theory test in the first week that will be used to determine if you can have exemptions for (some of) the theory classes.
