New Audiences and Innovative Practice

Musical careers are more flexible and more international than ever before. Musicians work together with professionals from different art disciplines and from various social sectors more often. The ever-changing professional field asks for musicians who are capable to work in the most diverse contexts and who know how to cope with the challenges of the current music industry. The study route New Audiences and Innovative Practice (NAIP), part of the Master of Music, was developed to deal with these challenges.

The 'Music Master for New Audiences and Innovative Practice' (NAIP) is the first European Master in the musical field. The two year innovative curriculum was designed by five conservatoires and seven external professional and educational institutions in four European countries.

NAIP is there for students from all musical genres who are interested in leading creative cross-over projects and attracting and creating of new audiences. You are being educated to become an excellent and all-round musician who is able to deal with different artistic and social contexts in a creative manner. In doing so, you as a musician will often work together with professionals from other art disciplines in various social projects.

Study Programme

Study Programme

The starting point of your study is joining the intensive International Introductory Course at one of the participating musical institutes in The Netherlands or abroad. After this, your study revolves around the Professional Integration Project (PIP). This project can be designed in any way depending on your own interests, ambitions and qualities and will eventually lead to finalising your Master. To prepare your PIP you follow some mandatory modules such as Performance & Communication, Leading & Guiding,  Project management & Entrepreneurship en Practice-based Research. In addition to the mandatory modules there is a variety of optional modules which you can choose within the Open Credits. It is also possible to bring in your own projects. Students in this master are all educated as musician or vocalist. Here you work towards developing your instrumental competences even more. You receive instrumental or vocal lessons from our own teachers and renowned guest teachers from all over the world. You also work on your improvisation skills in the LAB and the Creative Ensemble. You can use these skills on stage but also in interdisciplinary collaborations and in the field of education.

Classical Music:
- Vocals

- Flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone
- French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba
- Percussion, harp, guitar
- Violin, viola, cello, double bass

For jazz all main subject instruments are admissible.  

NAIP is also for students with a background in conducting or composition.

You carry out practice based research in order to become a better musician. The research is directly related to your personal study plan. Your research is linked to individual, content based and methodological coaching. Your research eventually leads to a presentation which is directly linked to your musical practice.

Open Credits

Within the open credits you can choose optional modules offered by the conservatoire. There is also the possibility to bring in your own projects.

Exchange

Partner Institutes / Exchange

This innovative two year master route was initiated by the research group Lifelong Learning in Music of the Prince Claus Conservatoire in collaboration with the Iceland Academy of the Arts (Reykjavik), the Royal College of Music (Stockholm), the Royal Conservatoire (The Hague) and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London). Therefore it is also possible to study at one of these institutes for a period of time.

After graduating you are an innovative musical master who is able to make music and lead and organise musical projects at a high level. You are capable to work together with professionals from other art disciplines and sectors in creative collaborative projects and performances, which take place in diverse contexts and places within society.
