New York Jazz

The New York Jazz master's programme is based on the active connection between the Jazz Department of the Prince Claus Conservatoire and the Jazz community in New York City. For example, during your studies in The Netherlands renowned musicians from New York visit on a weekly basis to teach you. In addition, all New York Jazz students go to New York City to live and study during their third semester! Besides this you receive lessons taught by our own renowned teachers in Groningen.

Study programme

Study programme

Your personal study plan is the starting point for your study. Using your study plan you work on developing your own voice by doing research and by practicing, composing and/or arranging music. To support this you can receive weekly lessons in improvisation, arranging, and composition. Together with your fellow students you form an ensemble where you work on your playing skills and your own repertoire. In this ensemble you are able to experiment with your research results. You are also guided by a coach every week and you take lessons from a different New York teacher every week. You will also have main instrument lessons from our Netherlands-based teachers. In addition, you will receive a personal lesson budget which you can use to take extra private lessons with the New York teachers or with teachers from outside the conservatoire (including of course during your semester in New York City)

Practice-based Research

Practice-based Research

You carry out practice-based research in order to become a better musician. The research is directly related to your personal study plan. Your research is linked to individual, content based and methodological coaching. Your research eventually leads to a presentation which is directly linked to your musical practice..

Project Management & Entrepreneurship

An entrepreneurial attitude is essential to transfer your musical passion to social situations successfully. In the Master of Music you are guided by modules and consults taught by experts in the field of entrepreneurship. Your vision on your personal future is the key here.

Studying in New York

Third semester in New York

New York City has been the centre of Jazz for decades now. It is the best destination for young jazz musicians to get to know the world's top musicians. To be part of such a lively community is the best educational opportunity every young talented jazz student could have. That is why you continue your Master study in New York during your third semester. You have private lessons with New York musicians, who you choose in consultation with us. You also take the class  American Culture Field Experience where you receive lessons in American Jazz History and you go on field trips with your fellow students.  This semester in not an exchange programme with a school in New York; you study independently with New York jazz musicians, which is financed and guided by the Prince Claus Conservatoire.

The third semester in New York is an essential part of the New York jazz study route. It is compulsory for all New York Jazz students to live and study in New York.
