Second year

After the first year, you will specialise in one of the following three roles: game designer, game artist or game developer. After the first year, complex projects within the programme, will combine the knowledge and skills of game designers, game artists, and game development students. Therefore, a large part of your training will take place in role-specific workshops This allows game designers to explore topics like interactive storytelling and player experience, while game artists study 3D modelling and animation, and developers learn to use C# and Unity3D for various artificial intelligence projects.

In the GameLab you can propose any idea. However, only the best ideas will be discussed after being judged by local experts from the industry. Judges will take into account creativity, innovation, as well as monetisation and technical feasibility. Concepts are adjusted and teams reshuffled until production commences. Then, a larger and more capable game development team works on making the best ideas a reality.

Completing the second year leaves you in an excellent position in terms of applying for an internship or studying abroad, as your new skills and knowledge, as well as your portfolio, will put you in an advantageous position.

Block 1: Emergent Game Design
In the first year, you have been introduced to game design basics and serious game design. Many successful games thrive on relatively simple game mechanics that provide complex interactions and situations. In this block, you will analyse existing cases and discussions to come up with and demonstrate your own take on emergent gameplay, within an entertainment game setting.

Block 2: Virtual Reality
The role of virtual reality (VR) is becoming increasingly apparent, both within the games industry as well as in many other domains of application. Successfully employing VR-solutions involves a complex interplay between creativity and technology. In this block, you will design and develop VR-applications in a game-based setting, within a serious game setting.

Block 3: GameLab #1
The first half of the GameLab is devoted to conceiving and honing a game concept from an initial bright idea towards a full-fledged production plan. You will run your own real or virtual company in this pre-incubator setup and have to successfully negotiate a number of gates to get your proposal accepted. This block, and the next, are conducted in an international setting where cooperation can take the form of virtual peer-reviews through to virtually connected teams.

Block 4: GameLab #2
Having successfully completed the first half of the GameLab with an underpinned concepts, this block is reserved for running full-on production in a larger team. You work from your role in your team and produce and publish a serious or entertainment game towards the end of your second year.
