Will you be developing the latest, most efficient electronic vehicle to meet people’s sustainable mobility needs? Will you be helping the energy transition along with your smart solutions that let systems communicate with each other? Or will your innovations lead to a revolution in health care perhaps? The Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme’s Electronics major lays the foundation for modern technological innovations that will make the world a better, smarter and more beautiful place. This is what we offer:

✔ Programme developed jointly with the business community ✔ Small, tight-knit groups ✔ Great job prospects

The Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme offers plenty of elective options. After the common first-year phase, you choose the specialisation (major) that best suits your interests and what you want to do. Besides Electronics, you can specialise in Sensor Technology or Mechatronics. So whether you want to tackle the full spectrum of electronics, sensors or mechanics, Hanze UAS has the right degree programme for you!

Projects with impact

What makes studying at Hanze UAS unique is that you will work on projects for real clients and contribute to concrete solutions for current issues impacting society. Below, you can find some examples of projects our students engage in.

About this programme

Electronics is one of the majors for the Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme. During your degree programme, you will develop a full range of knowledge and competences in the field of electrical and electronic engineering. Subjects will include robotics, programming, control engineering and data communication. You will start working on assignments for real-world clients from the professional field straight away and have lots of choice when it comes to studying the modules you want.

Why study the Electronics major at Hanze UAS?

  • Programme developed jointly with the business community: you will tackle challenging practice-based assignments in locations such as the Energy Academy Europe or the TechHub in Assen, working with real-life companies in a real-life working environment. This means that you will gain professional experience while studying and helping companies to become more effective, innovative and sustainable.
  • Small, tight-knit groups: The degree programme is small in scale and personal, so you will be working in small, tight-knit groups. The lecturers will know you personally, so there are many opportunities for one-to-one contact. Moreover, you will be assigned a mentor, who will play a key role in your personal and professional development. To top it all, we have a really fun study association that will welcome you with open arms.
  • Great job prospects: Upon completion of your studies, you will be able to take on a wide variety of roles – such as electrical or electronic engineer, software developer or application programmer. You will be employable by all kinds of companies, from specialist project development agencies to electronics multinationals, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Many of our students go on to work in sectors like health care, sustainable energy or transportation. The world is crying out for highly trained electronics specialists, so you will have outstanding job prospects.

Course overview

Year 1: first-year phase

You will receive an introduction to the multifaceted, exciting and wide-ranging world of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering together with all other first-year students. You will be taking your first steps in designing and developing electrical and electronic products. Subjects will include mathematics, programming, and analogue and digital techniques. In addition, you will be taking various practicals. Together with fellow students, you will complete project assignments based on intriguing challenges so that you can put what you have learnt into practice straight away. For example, you might learn to design and build a stress monitoring system or miniature energy supply.

If at any point during the year you discover that you would prefer to pursue a different specialisation within Electrical and Electronic Engineering such as Sensor Technology or Mechatronics, do not worry! It is still possible to switch.

Year 2

In the second year, you will dig into the specialisation you have chosen. If you chose Electronics, you will study topics like power electronics, control engineering and advanced programming. Default subjects will include control engineering, robotics and data communication. In addition, you will take practicals in workshops and apply the knowledge and skills you have gained in various projects originating from the professional field.

Year 3

In the third year, you will explore your specialisation in even greater depth by taking a minor and doing an internship. How you use your elective space is up to you: you can take a minor at Hanze UAS, another university of applied sciences in the Netherlands or even abroad! During your internship, you will put your knowledge and skills into practice for a national or international company or organisation. You can decide for yourself which one.

Year 4: graduation phase

In the fourth year, you will conclude your degree programme with an in-depth minor, such as Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Automation, Internet of Things or Flexible Energy Technology. In addition, you will complete a graduation project for a national or international company or organisation. With this graduation project, you will be able to demonstrate that you are the starting electrical and electronic engineer that the professional field is crying out for!

After your studies

Pursue a master’s degree

After your Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering you can follow a master's programme to become a Master of Science. You can choose to follow a transfer master at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, such as our Master Smart Systems Engineering, or you can continue your studies at a research university, such as the University of Groningen.

Students of the Electrical Engineering programme who continue their studies often choose:

  • Smart Systems Engineering, Hanze UAS Groningen
  • European Master in Renewable Energy, Hanze UAS Groningen
  • Biomedical Engineering, University of Groningen

Career prospects

After the Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering you will be awarded a Bachelor of Science degree and you will be able to work for companies and (research) institutions. 89% of graduates find their first job within a year. A large part of the alumni stays employed in the region, a small part is working abroad. Examples of positions are:

  • Research and Development Engineer
  • Research and Development Manager
  • Industrialisation Engineer
  • Automation Engineer
  • Field Engineer
