ENPHE Conference 2019: A Green Conference

We are a team of students and staff committed to environmental sustainability. Extend horizons, however at the same time limit our carbon footprint. We express our passion by linking our activities to the Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs), and by improving the sustainability policy at Hanze UAS through the different projects we initiate and follow up.

Our aims are:

  • 0% waste in 2025

  • No more usage of natural gas in our buildings in 2025

  • Every student and alumnus is a green ambassador in 2025

  • In 2025 our employees are sustainable role models for the world around them

We have embedded SDGs and sustainability into our curricula so we can educate and train health professionals who regard sustainability as self-evident and act accordingly. Hanze UAS is a Fair-Trade University of Applied Sciences, and has good ratings in the sustainability rankings, such as the SustainaBul and the HBO Benchmark. The university signed an agreement with key players in the northern economy aiming to make Groningen energy neutral in 2035. Hanze UAS is the leader in applied research into renewable energy.

One of our goals is to organize a Green ENPHE-Conference. With your help, we can make a change! Join the other ENPHE-participants in paving the way to a better future for all of us.

  • We selected venues that have easy access by public transport, bicycle or by foot.

  • The ENPHE-conference is meatless. This drastically lowers the ENPHE-carbon footprint per meal and reduces animal suffering.

  • We do not hand-out goody bags and encourage all the participants to check the programme online via phone, iPad or laptop.

  • We recycle as much as we can during the event.

Attendee Engagement

  • If your travel distance to the Hanze is less than 1000 km, try to come by train or car. When using the car: travel together.

  • Recycle all/as much as you can during the event.

  • Deposit used lanyards and badges in label recycle receptacles.

  • Use the event app and/or the electronic seminar platform in lieu of printed programs or printed articles.

  • Shut off lights and technology equipment in academic and hotel rooms when not in use.

  • Walk, bike or use public transportation while in town.

    • From the very first moment you arrive in Groningen you will notice this city is full of bikes! It's definitely the easiest and fastest way to get around and it is the transportation of choice for almost every student. There are some small challenges that will require skilful biking, such as slippery cobblestones or crossroads when all the traffic lights for bicycles are green at the same time, but no need to worry! You'll pick up city biking easy enough and in no time, you'll be riding that bike as smoothly as any Gruninger.

    • When you're not on your 'steel steed' or when the weather is very poor, our well-organized public transportation system offers you a comfortable alternative.

  • Reduce food waste and minimise the consumption of heavily packaged foods.

  • Eat vegetarian: it drastically lowers your carbon footprint per meal and reduces animal suffering. Try some vegetarian restaurants or cafes. Groningen has a wide range of great, cosy places to offer.

  • Drink tap water: All tap water is perfectly drinkable in the Netherlands. The quality check of our tap water is very thorough. During the conference tap water is available to you through our water coolers in The Wiebenga and at the sinks in the toilets or pantries. Make good use of them! You can refill your water bottle here for free. Start your ENPHE-registration by obtaining a Dopper (with Hanze logo), the Dutch design reusable water bottle. If ordered, it will be handed out to you at the registration desk.
