Teacher Education for Primary Schools programme (Pabo)

The Pabo (Teacher Education for Primary Schools) programme is the largest degree programme in the School of Education. The programme lasts four years and trains students to become innovative primary school teachers – teachers who cultivate the talent of their students (in the age group 4 – 12 years). Below is an explanation of the study programme structure.

The first and second academic years of the programme consist of increasing students' basic knowledge. The programme focuses on the professional knowledge, teaching methodology, skills and behavioural aspects necessary to later take on the role of teacher. Students work on their own 'knowledge bases'. At the end of the second academic year, students choose a profile from either 'the young child' (groups 1 through 4: ages 4 to 7) or 'the older child' (groups 5 through 8: ages 8 to 12).

Starting from the third academic year, the chosen target group of 'the young child' or 'the older child' is a central focus of the study and students delve into the specific knowledge and skills related to these children. A great deal of attention is paid to identifying and diagnosing learning and development issues in children from this target group, as well as to teaching methods geared towards this target group.

In the fourth academic year students work as prospective teachers (Teachers in Training – LIO) at a primary school for six months. During the LIO work placement, students are responsible for all professional tasks in the educational setting. Students also conduct applied research during the LIO work placement and present their results in a research thesis.

Students then choose to follow a six-month elective programme or minor. They can select from a wide range of these from the School of Education, our university of applied sciences or other universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands. Students can also spend a semester abroad or complete a work placement abroad.

After obtaining the Bachelor of Education, graduates are qualified to teach all groups in primary education, special (primary) education, special secondary education and vocational education in the Netherlands.
