Primary Education

The programme ‘Primary Education’ at the School of Education consists of 30 ECTS. The course ‘English in Primary Education’ is compulsory. Next to this course you can choose one of the courses 2, 3, 4 or 5 below.


1. English in Primary Education

The module ‘English in Primary Education’ will take place from February until April and consists of 15 ECTS. The course is initially designed for (international) students at the School of Education of Hanze University of Applied Sciences, but admission of foreign students from various academic areas will also be considered. Students must have completed at least one year of their undergraduate studies at their home institution. English is the language of instruction. Students will study three areas of special interest:

  1. Pronunciation and fluency aimed at teaching primary English;
  2. Literature on foreign language learning and teaching, as well as the use of children’s literature in the classroom; 
  3. Designing and testing activating and stimulating teaching activities for young learners of English as a foreign language. The assessment consists of a paper in which the student accounts for the
    three areas of expertise.

2. Inclusive Education

This module will take place from April until July and consists of 15 ECTS. The module will focus on how special needs is organized in the Netherlands. It gives the students the possibility to compare special needs in the Netherlands with special needs in their own country. Together with the theoretical part there will be organized school visits as well. The assessment consists of a paper.

3. ICT in Primary Education

21st Century Skills play an important part in primary education. In this module students will learn more about:

  • Blended learning; how can you use different digital tools, for example Prowise, to make your lessons more interactive? What is the theory of multimedia learning (Mayer)? What about Flipping the classroom? And how can you design your own interactive digital lesson?
  • Tools for primary education; how can I use Classdojo, Twitter, Yurls and Serious Gaming in primary education? Which apps can I use for example for math or science?
  • Computational thinking & coding; How can I teach 5 year old children coding? Who is Ruby? How do Beebot, Cubetto, Scratch Jr., Lego WeDo, Lego Mindstorms work?
  • Digital literacy; how can you teach children to use internet in a safe way? Who are you on the internet? Is everything you read on the internet true? How can I use Social Media in a safe way?

Students will discover the possibilities of ICT in education. They will do some research, follow online workshops and develop their own lessons for primary education. The assessment consists of a portfolio with 4 assignments: research paper + poster, digital interactive lesson, create/ follow online workshops and an assignment on digital literacy. The module will take place from April until July and consists of 15 ECTS.

4. Positive Psychology

This course will take place from February until July and consists of 15 ECTS. The key question in this module is: How can we make life better for a specific group of people, within the framework of a school organisation. Within a team of students the student will answer this question by developing and implementing an intervention based on the knowledge and techniques of positive psychology which the student will be gaining during the programme.
The assessment consists of making an action plan in the first period and in the second period implementing the intervention and presenting the outcomes.

5. Health and Management: Lifestyle

In this course students will get in touch with the professional environment of an organization. The students will fulfill some assessments in practice. The students will visit an organization (i.c. schools) where sports and lifestyle will play a role. The students are going to make an intervention in such an organization in order to foster the lifestyle in the broadest sense. The module will take place from April until July and consists of 15 ECTS.

  • Admission requirements: the programme is open to students of teacher training colleges, but students of other academic areas may also be considered. Sufficient knowledge of English is required.
  • Application deadline: November 1, 2017
  • Tuition fees: exchange students generally do not have to pay tuition fees.
  • Credits: 30 ECTS
