Dick Pouwels new Chair of the Executive Board of Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen
The Supervisory Board of Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, has appointed Dick Pouwels as Chair of the Executive Board from 1 January 2021. Dick Pouwels is currently Chair of the Executive Board of HAS UAS, a university of applied sciences with expertise in and a strong focus on agribusiness, food and environment, located in 's-Hertogenbosch and Venlo. He succeeds Henk Pijlman, who is leaving Hanze UAS after twenty years of service. The Hanze Works Council issued a positive recommendation on the appointed of Pouwels.
"We are confident that with Mr Pouwels as new Executive Board Chair, we will be in very good hands over the coming years and look forward to working with him", according to Dina Boonstra, Chair of the Supervisory Board of Hanze UAS.
Dick Pouwels: "I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to lead Hanze UAS, which is well-rooted in the community and delivers quality education and research. It is my ambition to build on and further develop that quality basis, together with my Hanze UAS colleagues. To use the expertise within Hanze UAS to make a significant contribution to such social issues as energy, sustainability, climate, quality of life, and health. Themes that concern both a vibrant society and a vibrant economy. And to give students a future-oriented, multidisciplinary education with scope to develop their own programme of study.
I grew up in Groningen, I studied here and go to an FC Groningen match with our children every year; there has always been a strong connection with the North."
Izaäk van Jaarsveld, Chair of the Hanze Participation Council: "Pouwels' Groningen roots are a perfect match for Hanze UAS, which is firmly anchored in the North. His capacity to connect and his conviction that students should be pivotal make him a worthy heir of the progress that Pijlman achieved."
Managerial bridge builder
Mr Pouwels satisfies the profile desired by the Supervisory Board in every respect. His excellent track record as governor in higher education is consonant with the ambition to further strengthen the position of Hanze UAS in the region.

The number of students enrolling at HAS also grew significantly in recent years and the UAS underwent a reorganisation to strengthen the connection between education, research and professional practice.
Besides his considerable regional network in Brabant, Limburg and Zeeland, Dick Pouwels also has many contacts in the northern Netherlands, thanks to his political network, the top sector Agrifood and his SME contacts.
He has a clear vision of the future for Hanze UAS, which will focus on intensive, result-oriented collaboration both inside and outside the university.
