On any given Friday one can choose from over 40 live concerts in the city of Groningen. This is one of the many facts and figures that can be extracted from the results of the project 'Musicscape Groningen – Live!'. This project is about the musical landscape in which residents of Groningen live in 2010 and it is part of Evert Bisschop Boele's doctoral research into the listening behaviour of modern individual listeners.

Overview and insight musical offerings Groningen

In the project 'Musicscape Groningen – Live!' a description as complete as possible has been made of the Groningen musical landscape during a two week period (12-25 April). The inventory of live concerts was done in two locations: the city of Groningen and the municipality of Appingedam, as an example of Groningen's rural environment. The information has been collected in a database.
What did the live Musicscape of Groningen look like during the period researched? Inhabitants of the province of Groningen can choose from a large number of live offerings. The bulk of the offerings is in the city of Groningen, but the countryside also has considerable musical options, both in the larger communities and in the countless small villages. The way this is distributed and across which musical genres; what the average entrance fee is; what the number of seats is in the many, both commercial and subsidized, concert venues. This and many other questions are answered by the project.

Versatile presentation

In the project, researcher Evert Bisschop Boele worked together with students of the Prince Claus Conservatoire, Minerva Academy and the Institute for Communication and Media of the Hanze University Groningen. On Tuesday 19 October 2010 he presented his findings in a variety of manners: he gave a presentation-with-powerpoint on the results and a booklet on the project was presented; a composition which was written (with funding from the Groningen Arts Council), based on this project, by an alumnus of the Prince Claus Conservatoire was premièred and there was an exhibition of photographic impressions of Groningen's Musicscape by students from Minerva Academy.
