'Be part of the action with CityProms!'

Vulnerable and vital older people meet each other as equal participants during creative music workshops in the project 'Be part of the action with CityProms!' ('Maak het mee met CityProms!'). In this project they engage in social activities with people they already know and with new people in their environment.

The creative workshops are given by the experienced workshop leader Kees van der Meer, supported by music students from the Prince Claus Conservatoire. Location for the workshops are the care homes where the elderly live. Not only the people from the care home will participate, but people from the neighbourhood as well.

A workshop consists of four sessions in which the participants will eventually make a musical product, based on their own way of living and background. The musical end product will be presented in a public performance for residents of the care home and the surrounding community. For the participants the music workshops are a way to express themselves musically and to share their life experience in a creative way.

New professional perspectives

Giving creative music workshops to the elderly is a new and relatively unknown field. The research group Lifelong Learning in Music of the Prince Claus Conservatoire started a project in which creative music workshops were given as pilots. An important objective of these workshops, in which vulnerable older people are linked to vital participants, is achieving results in an artistic-musical area, but also increasing feelings of comfort and wellbeing.

Another important objective is developing the methodology of creative music workshops with the elderly. The Prince Claus Conservatoire aims to make the giving of this kind of music workshops part of the professional perspective of the students and graduates of the conservatoire.

Results widely available

The research group Lifelong Learning in Music will document the outcomes of the project, as an extension of earlier pilot projects in this field. The outcomes will be made freely available for everyone who is interested. Together with the care institutions the research group will also attempt to make the results known to a wide support base in the care sector.

The project will be carried out by CityProms (Stichting MuzThinc) with the research group Lifelong Learning in Music and the Prince Claus Conservatoire (Hanze UAS) during the months September, October and November 2013.

'Maak het mee!' was made possible by the thematic programme 'Vitality meets vulnerability' VITOK van the RCOAK Foundation and the Sluyterman van Loo Foundation.
