Student psychologist

Your time as a student is – apart from being exciting and interesting – also a period of great personal development. During this period, either because of unexpected circumstances or because of changes within yourself, things can happen that may have an impact on your psychological health and well-being and influence your ability to study.

Why a student psychologist?

Examples of issues that can have an impact on you are prolonged periods of sadness or loneliness, anxiety, an unhealthy amount of stress or life and identity questions. If you are dealing with these types of issues, it is possible to discuss them with a student psychologist. Together, you will explore insights and solutions for the purpose of allowing you to resume your studies normally.

Is this suitable for me?

The student psychologist does not focus on treating severe (pre-existing) psychological disorders. They use a solution-oriented approach, aimed at keeping psychological problems from getting worse and maintaining your role as a student, to prevent dropout. If necessary, the student psychologist can refer you to the GP and/or a mental healthcare organisation.
Making use of the student psychologist is free of charge for all Hanze UAS students.

How do I make an appointment with the student psychologist?

If you have never been in contact with Hanze Student Support, you should first make an appointment with a student counsellor. The student counsellor can help you find practical solutions or study facilities that may be important and can also help you come up with a clear question for the student psychologist. Any subsequent appointments should be made with the student psychologist directly.

Please be aware that if you are unable to attend a scheduled meeting with a student psychologist, you can contact the front office up to 24 hours prior to the appointment. If not cancelled in time (regardless of the reason), there will be a charge of €25.

Confidential and independent

Meetings with a student psychologist are confidential. No information will be communicated to others without your consent or knowledge. The student psychologists are centrally based at Student Services, so they are not attached to a school or study programme and thus operate independently.
