The MINERVA Academy of Pop Culture is located in the North-West of the Netherlands in the city of Leeuwarden. We offer the bachelor program Popular Culture. The minor program is part of the bachelor program and has the same interdisciplinary approach of learning and working in which crossovers are possible. We focus on concepting, creating, and sharing. Our strength is to work and learn in creative teams and to create new networks.

We educate our students in becoming artistic professionals and are interested in what the student would like to learn or would like to develop. All our students work on their own projects.  As a minor student you will do the same.  Before you start you have to focus on specific goals you want to achieve.  During the project you will be working with concrete targets, have a specific audience and maybe work with a real budget. For this type of education you need to be responsible and be able to motivate yourself.  All projects are for real and do not only exist on paper. This means you can realize them somewhere, somehow within the field of Popular Culture.

Production House

The core of the minor program consists of production house meetings and lab sessions. A production house has approximately twenty students and two tutors. This is the place where you develop knowledge, give presentations, reflect, debate, have field trips etc. The production house focuses on Research & Development and Project Coaching. We use different methods for example presenting your progress to other students or debate on current issues regarding your project or pop culture in general. You will receive project coaching based on your plan and goals and we have field trips to artistic professionals, companies, festivals etc.
Time Schedule: 2x a week (mornings) during the whole semester you will enter the same production-house group.

For the instrumental skills you can go to what we call lab meetings. Within the labs you focus on doing experiments, making stuff and presenting  In the lab you will be focusing on working on a specifc coretask. You will focus on spefifiek artistic products you have to deliver at the end of the lab. Examples of some labs are: Word Up (Spoken Word), piano, dj, recording, musictheater, multidisciplinairy performance, songskills, album release, developing your brand,  visual analysis, silkscreen printing, circulair design, merchandise, cultural philosophy, short film, film history. Presenting your work to an audience etc., In the centre of each lab are the personal learning goals of the students.
Time Schedule: 1x a week during 5 weeks per lab. During the semester you will attend 3 different labs. Lab-sessions will take place in the afternoon.

Examples of projects former minor students worked on: making a video clip, doing research on subjects regarding music or design, offering workshops, band coaching, creating a concept for a festival, writing songs, organizing an event, produce an album, organizing a release party, publicity for a theatre festival, designing a magazine etcetera.

At the Academy we do not work with grades. Each student works on collecting coretasks. During the minor program you have to work on 3 coretasks. Each coretask is 10 EC. At the end of the minor you have to take an assessment in order to receive 30 EC. Each coretask has to be examined sufficient. During the process you will collect feedback on your project.
