The transition towards renewable energy sources like sun, wind, biomass and geothermal energy is supported by a growing and increasingly important industry. Interdisciplinarity is the key word here. Economic, legal, social, technological and environmental issues all come together in one big challenge: implementing new concepts in a world that seems addicted to the old energy sources. New professionals need to understand the complexities of doing business in a vastly changing energy market. They must be capable of designing and modelling innovative business plans, as well as implementing them in real world situations.

In order to support the development of human capital necessary for this energy transition, the association of European Renewable Energy Centres (EUREC) and three of its members developed the European Master in Sustainable Energy System Management (SESyM). This master programme will allow students with a background in economics, social sciences, management and systemic studies to join the sustainable energy industry. The programme is complementary to the European Master in Renewable Energy programme that is already available for technically oriented students.


Structure of the programme

SESyM follows the same successful three-part structure as the European Master in Renewable Energy programme. The three parts are the core semester, the specialisation and the thesis project. Each semester has a full-time study load of 30 ECTS credits, so 90 ECTS for the complete programme. The 16-months programme starts in the first week of September.

Semster 1 - Core

The core part is located at Hanze UAS in Groningen (Netherlands).

Semester 2 - Specialisation

Upon completion of the core semester three specialisations are available: System Innovation Management (Hanze UAS, the Netherlands), Sustainable Energy and ICT (Howest UAS, Belgium) or Sustainable Energy Management (University of Zaragoza, Spain).

Semester 3 - Thesis

After completing the specialisation, you carry out a thesis research project for a company or a research centre.

After completion of the programme the student will obtain the degree title 'European MSc. in Sustainable Energy System Management'.

  • International focus. Not only because of the international student mix, but also because the programme offers the unique opportunity to study in at least two European countries. This means you will have the opportunity to get involved in a range of European universities and companies related to the renewable energy sector.
  • Interactive teaching methods with a strong focus on coaching, discussion, presentations and group work.



The European Master in Sustainable Energy System Management is an initiative proposed and developed by the association of European Renewable Energy Research Centres (EUREC) and a consortium of Universities. The programme started in September 2015 by a network of three European Universities. It is coordinated by EUREC EEIG, a consortium of European renewable energy research centres, which has its headquarters in Brussels. EUREC was founded in 1991 as European Economic Interest Grouping (EEIG) with the goal of improving the quality and scope of European research and development in renewable energy technologies. The purpose of the association is to promote and support the development of innovative technologies and human resources to enable a prompt transition to a sustainable energy system. EUREC is the voice of renewable energy research in Europe, representing European Research Centres active in renewable energy. For further information about EUREC please visit our website at The decision body of the European Master in Sustainable Energy System Management is the Steering Committee. It is composed of one member per Partnering University and supported by EUREC secretariat. 



Hanze University of Applied Sciences offers both the European Master in Renewable Energy (EMRE) and the European Master in Sustainable Energy System Management (SESyM). The EMRE and SESyM programmes are complementary to one another. In the table below the commonalities and differences between both masters are visualised.
