Wednesday 13 december inauguration P. Hogg

On Wednesday 13 December the inauguration of visiting professor P. Hogg will take place. The professorship will focus on the theme ‘Towards a world leading international collaboration in radiography research and teaching’.

‘Towards a world leading international collaboration in radiography research and teaching’
Diagnostic imaging plays a critical role in the detection and follow-up of disease
and trauma in humans. X-ray technologies such as CT and conventional radiography continue to have a central role and using these technologies research is used to underpin radiography practice in order to create fit for purpose images that are produced with low radiation doses; this is achieved whilst delivering good quality patient care.

Peter Hogg leads the Diagnostic Imaging Research Programme (DIRP) at the University of Salford (UoS), UK. DIRP comprises several multinational interdisciplinary research teams and these include PhD students, academic staff and clinical staff. In 2016 DIRP was ranked 3rd most prolific radiography research unit in the world. DIRP research focuses on the ‘optimisation of radiation dose and image quality’, and ‘mammography imaging for breast cancer detection’. These research foci fit with UoS’ research ambitions for supporting healthy ageing; this Healthy Ageing agenda is consistent with Hanze’s strategic ambitions thereby creating a good basis for collaboration.

Together with colleagues, Peter has made various discoveries, proposed new perspectives and outlined new theories; many of these have influenced radiography practice on the world stage.

Peter Hogg has a long history of working with the Hanze School of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (MIRT). Together they have co-authored over 30 conference and journal papers and produced 3 books. Their most recent empirical article (October, 2017) is published in the prestigious European Journal of Radiology and it addresses the probability of cancer induction from mammography screening.

Peter Hogg’s inaugural professorial lecture will outline some of his research and also illustrate ways in which MIRT can work with UoS in teaching and research to deliver world-leading radiography teaching and research.
