What we stand for

Ever since the first lesson in 1836, we have been building a solid learning network in the North. Our core has remained unchanged in all this time: we want to be meaningful to the world around us. We help students and professionals discover and develop their talent and we contribute to a strong region. We are committed to this every day. We do this in learning communities and innovation hubs where education, research and professional practice reinforce each other.

Together with our environment, we work on practical solutions for the issues of today and tomorrow. It is in the connection between learning, research and doing that our strength lies. Students, lecturers, researchers and field professionals combine their knowledge, talent and expertise to achieve meaningful change, in the region and beyond.

Anyone who wants to learn, develop and contribute to the world around them is welcome. We provide an inclusive environment in which motivation, well-being and engagement are central. With us you are seen, challenged and supported. Development goes beyond knowledge or skills, it is also about who you are and what you want to contribute to society. Personal and professional growth go hand in hand for us, and that development does not stop with a diploma. Professionals have also come to the right place, at every stage of their career, for deepening or broadening their skills and knowledge or to find a new direction. So that they can continue to make a difference in a world and professional field that is constantly evolving. That is what we stand for as Hanze. Together we bring our motto to life:
share your talent. move the world.

Social challenges

As a knowledge institute in the North, we contribute to the social challenges of our region. Together with our partners, we are working on the regional innovation agenda and broad prosperity in the Northern Netherlands, economically, socially, ecologically and culturally. Four transitions are central: in the field of circularity, energy, care and health, and digitalisation. These social challenges are firmly anchored within Hanze and give direction to our education, practice-oriented research and the way in which we work together and organise ourselves. To place our regional efforts in a global context, we link these tasks to the Sustainable Development Goals, so that our choices are meaningful both locally and globally.
