As professor of Family Care, Marie Louise is affiliated with the professorship Nursing Diagnostics at the School of Nursing. The research within the Family Care professorship focuses on developing knowledge in the field of family structure, functioning, and the processes that take place within families facing a chronically ill family member.
Family care is about supporting informal carers within a family when they are confronted with chronic illness. The research within Family Care focuses on developing knowledge about the structure, functioning, and dynamics of families dealing with a chronically ill family member. Luttik’s research specifically focuses on developing evidence-based interventions, such as Het Familiegesprek, to support families facing serious health problems. In recent years, she has developed specialist research and training in this field.
In the future, healthcare will increasingly rely on the support of families and informal carers to provide care for our older and chronically ill population. There is growing evidence that families confronted with a loved one’s serious health problems are themselves at greater risk of stress-related conditions and problems within the family.
Family care rests on two key principles:
- Families influence the process and outcomes of care for patients.
- Health and illness affect all members of a family, and providing informal care impacts the lives of those who provide it.
