HyTROS: research into hydrogen transport and storage
- Research project
Within the HyTROS (Hydrogen Transport, Offshore and Storage) project, we are doing applied research into hydrogen transport and storage. The goal is to accelerate the upscaling of green hydrogen in the Netherlands.
The Netherlands is Europe's second-largest hydrogen producer, with an annual output exceeding 10 billion m³ of hydrogen. This is primarily extracted from fossil fuels, leading to approximately 13 million tons of CO2 emissions per year. To enable large-scale production of carbon-neutral hydrogen (green hydrogen), the Netherlands aims to have 4GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030. This requires system adjustments.
Important questions when applying large-scale green hydrogen production are:
To get answers to these questions, the partners of HyTROS do research into:
The HyTROS consortium consists of 10 universities, 3 research institutes, 2 universities of applied sciences, and seventeen industrial partners. All national and regional grid operators that will transport hydrogen, future storage operators, and the supply industry for onshore and offshore pipeline installations, inspection and maintenance are participating in the HyTROS research programme.
