Many SME entrepreneurs face a significant risk of cybercrime, such as phishing and ransomware, but often have limited insight into how digitally resilient their business is. This project investigates whether and how so-called detection tools, digital ‘alarm systems’ that identify suspicious activity at an early stage, can help SMEs recognise cyber threats more quickly and limit damage.

In a pilot involving ten SME companies, the project examines which detection tools are effective in practice, how entrepreneurs use them, and which technical, human and organisational factors play a role. Attention is also given to questions of responsibility: who is liable in the event of a cyber incident the entrepreneur or the IT service provider?

The aim of the project is to provide SMEs with practical support in strengthening their digital resilience, to create clarity regarding responsibilities, and to explore how these solutions can be deployed in a sustainable and affordable way over the long term.
