Mobisitie: supporting policy choices about sustainable mobility
- Research project
Sustainable mobility is a hot issue , and it's no coincidence that it's one of Entrance’s themes. The transport sector is responsible for almost 20% of all CO2 emissions, so searching for more sustainable alternatives is well worth the effort. Sustainable also means an area remains accessible and livable. In rural municipalities, this is often a big challenge. In the Mobisitie project, we're examining the challenges in three municipalities: Ameland, Ooststellingwerf, and Westerkwartier. The goal is to develop a system that can support officials in making policy choices.
For rural municipalities, the transition to a sustainable mobility system is extra challenging because these regions must also remain livable and accessible. Shaping good policy is often complex, for example, because relevant information is difficult to find. Since the behavior of residents plays a crucial role in mobility, citizen participation is necessary when determining policy. However, involving residents also requires knowledge, which isn't always readily available.
Therefore this project aims to deliver a digital tool that helps officials create policies. In this so-called Policy Choice Support System (PCSS), much of the research and design work on themes like shared mobility and switching from car to bicycle is automated. Existing and new data sources are combined, which delivers new insights. These then form the basis for the design of communication and participation with residents. This is how sustainable behavioral change is achieved.
