Train the change agent: simulation of the implementation of digital technology in elderly care
- Research project
Older people are living longer, often with multiple chronic conditions. Elderly care is under increasing pressure due to rising demand and the limited growth in the number of care professionals. Digital healthcare technology (eHealth) is often seen as an important means of supporting the care process. But how can successful implementation of eHealth be achieved in the complex healthcare environment?
The project ‘Train the Change Agent’ focuses on better preparing change agents for the implementation of eHealth in elderly care, thereby promoting sustainable implementation.
The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport warned in 2022 about the increasing pressure on elderly care and called for rapid change. Population ageing and rising demand for care require a shift towards greater independence, home-based care and digital solutions such as eHealth.
eHealth has the potential to enhance the self-reliance and quality of life of older people, support reablement, and contribute to both the affordability and quality of care. In addition, technological innovation supports healthcare professionals by creating a safer, more effective and more efficient working environment, reducing the burden of unnecessary tasks.
In many healthcare organisations, innovation managers or project leaders are responsible for leading the implementation of eHealth. These so-called ‘change agents’, however, encounter challenges in achieving sustainable implementation, as the healthcare sector is complex and each organisation is unique.
Experiments cannot simply be carried out due to the vulnerability of the target group. Moreover, every healthcare organisation is different, and implementation requires significant change capacity. This cannot simply be replicated from other care institutions.
The project “Train the Change Agent” aims to overcome these barriers by better preparing change agents for the complex situations involved in the implementation and scaling up of eHealth in elderly care. The project focuses on creating a virtual learning environment in which change agents can experience complex implementation scenarios and develop the necessary skills.
Based on these learning experiences, change agents can make better-informed decisions and promote the sustainable implementation of healthcare technology.
The project ‘Train the Change Agent’ is an initiative of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen and NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with Saxion University of Applied Sciences and the University of Groningen. In addition, the project works closely with several elderly care organisations in the Northern Netherlands: Zorggroep Meander, ZuidOostZorg, Interzorg Noord Nederland, KwadrantGroep, Zorggroep Hof en Hiem, and Bos en Meerzicht. Finally, 8DGames is a partner in this project, contributing its expertise to the technical and substantive development of the simulation platform and the learning intervention.
The project aligns with initiatives such as HealthTech in Society, Health Noord, FAITH research and Anders Werken in de Zorg.
This project is funded through a RAAK grant from Regieorgaan SIA, has a duration of two years, and is expected to start in June 2024.
