Biotechnology - International Exchange Semester
Does a career at the cutting edge of science appeal to you? Would you like to broaden your experience in a diverse range of Biotechnology and laboratory techniques? This is your chance! The International Exchange Programme Biotechnology starts in February (spring semester) in the best student city of the Netherlands: Groningen!
The International Exchange Semester Biotechnology is part of the minor Biotechnology within the programme of Biology and Medical Research.
Biotechnology is a quickly evolving research area that covers a broad range of topics, such as genetic and molecular engineering, plant biotechnology, medicinal and pharmaceutical biotechnology and process engineering. There is a high demand for educated people to help this fast growing field grow towards a better future. This practice-based exchange programme in Biotechnology is not able to cover all aspects of Biotechnology, but will be focusing in more detail into a subset of these topics. The Exchange programme is considered to be a specialization within Biotechnology and this means a certain level of knowledge on biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology and biochemistry is a prerequisite to start.
Besides the theoretical modules, there is a strong emphasis on the practical execution of a research project during the Laboratory Courses (in total 14 ECTS), in which students work as independent couples on designated research projects. These research projects are usually part of ongoing research done at the knowledge institutes of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences. For example, previous and current research projects are linked to production bacterial production of bioplastics (PHA, polyhydroxyalkanoates), specific conditions (e.g. light wavelengths) influencing growth of plants, research on the processing of field beans in order to extract proteins for food production (protein transition) and various other projects.
More details on the different modules can be found below.
- Due to the coronavirus, the Hanze University is currently operating with a combination of both online and face-to-face teaching (hybrid). We anticipate that the spring semester will be run similarly, and we are looking into the possibility of also offering this exhange programme in a hybrid fashion -
