​​​There is a great demand for public affairs practitioners who are trained to operate in a dynamic political and societal context, have intercultural communication competences, and are concerned with communication in a market as well as a non-market environment. The specialisation Public Affairs prepares you for a challenging career in public affairs and corporate communication. You will learn about strategic interest representation in international and European environments. You will work in an international team on a real life assignments, and in a cooperation with real clients.

There are always several projects that focus on energy transition related societal issues and communication. In coming years you will have an opportunity to work on projects linked with a research carried on at Lectoraat Communication and Sustainable Society and Centre of Applied Research and Innovation Energy of the Hanze UAS. You may also choose to work on projects dealing with the use of social media for public purposes and social innovation. In previous years students worked in cooperation with public affairs professionals from Gasunie, environmental researchers from the Energy Delta Institute, and for Burns Turiani, a foundation working in aid & development in Africa. The study trip to Brussels, during which you will carry a field research and interview experts and professionals, is an integral part of the programme.

​The educational programme of Public Affairs focuses on the development of professional competences needed for the job of a junior consultant in public affairs / corporate communication: the ability to draw a strategic interest representation, publicity forming, reputation, positioning, or organisational imago improving advice, which would be based on insights supported by research, theory, and good practice.

The core of the programme is project, a so called capstone assignment. Based on initial research and issues monitoring you will draft a public affairs strategy (1st block), which will be further elaborated into a detailed strategy implementation plan with a suggestion of an evaluation strategy (2nd block). You will monitor organisation's communication environment, identify trends, stakeholders, define issues, and learn to set goals for communication strategies. You will study cases on CSR and reputation management, learn lobbying techniques, and master writing and speaking for public affairs. Please note that it is mandatory to fully participate in the programme.

The educational programme includes a study trip abroad to one of 'world' capitals with visits to international organisations, NGO's, think tanks, and lobby agencies. You will have to carry a field research, including interviewing of experts and professionals, in order to get the necessary information and knowledge for your project assignment. Next year we will go to the biggest European lobbying capital - Brussels. The expected costs are about € 300. 

It is mandatory to fully participate in all courses of this programme. Therefore, you cannot drop any courses during the semester.
