Competence-based curriculum

Competence-based curriculum

The study programme Physiotherapy is a professional allied health programme. In order to guarantee that your knowledge meets the criteria set by the professional field, these criteria are translated into competences. Your education revolves around the development of these competences. Examples of these competences are:

  • working methodically and applying clinical-based thinking
  • providing interested parties with information on prevention
  • conducting research
  • adopting a professional attitude
  • communicating with others in your field, and with other health professionals.

Study structure

Study structure

The Physiotherapy programme is a four-year programme (240 EC). Each year is divided into two semesters and each semester into two blocks. During these blocks, you will have approximately 17 contact hours per week; independent learning and practical training fill the remaining hours. The theoretical part is offered in small tutorial groups (12 students). An assessment takes place at the end of each block.

Year 1

Year 1

During the first year (Dutch: propedeuse) preparing the student for his later profession occupies a central position. With the help of various categories of patients, medical-biological and physiotherapeutic subjects pass under review. You will also start studying subjects such as psychology, sociology, psychopathology and communication skills. After your first year, you will get binding advice about the continuation of your studies, based on your actual study results.

Year 2

Year 2

During your second year you will study more in depth both theory and methods of treatment. Just as it happened in your first year, every block is rounded off with an exam.

Year 3, 4

Year 3, 4

During year three and the first semester of year four, you will take the minor Physiotherapy and Adults, you will start your work placement and you will also have to choose an exchange

programme or minor. It's possible to choose an exchange programme or minor abroad at one of our partner universities, or a at Hanze UAS, Groningen. For example the minors Global Health & Quantified Self, Healthy Ageing or Sports.

In the last semester of year 4 you will work on your graduation assignment in combination with your final work placement.

Choice of optional subjects

Choice of optional subjects

Next to attending the mandatory Bachelor programme, you will have the opportunity to fill in your own, personal professional profile. During the main phase you will have a choice of optional subjects and free modules. You can also be active next to your Bachelor programme.

Case studies

Case studies

Throughout the curriculum you learn how to treat patients just like a physiotherapist would. You learn basic skills such as physical assessment, treatment and communication skills. These different skills are integrated into case studies, which are an important part of the programme. From the very beginning you will be working on these case studies, finding the right solutions to the problems of the patients involved. This is called problem-based learning (PBL).

Studying abroad

Studying abroad

As a member of the European Network of Physiotherapy Higher Education (ENPHE), the Bachelor programme of Physiotherapy is involved in the development of the European standard for physiotherapists. Due to this network you can acquire a truly international outlook: you may think, for instance, of exchange programmes with foreign Bachelor programmes. In this way you will have the opportunity to do internships abroad.

Degree Profile

Degree Profile

The Degree Profile describes what graduates will know, understand and be able to do by the time they have successfully completed their programme. The Profile spells out what can be expected of the graduates in terms of tasks, level of expertise and future responsibilities. Furthermore this Profile can be used as an orientation tool when choosing a study and as a guide in the acquisition of competences. The Degree Profile can also be valuable in establishing partnerships with other educational institutions. Profession

Profession

As a physiotherapist you work at the quality of life. A defective locomotor apparatus restricts people in their activities. It affects their freedom. Whether it is an old lady recovering from a hip operation, a construction worker with back complaints or a sportsman with an injury - all of them are hampered in their possibilities. In these cases, pain often plays an important part. As a physiotherapist, you have a number of techniques and instruments at your disposal to help the patients referred to you by their general practitioner and/or specialist. Sometimes you are able to remedy complaints, sometimes you may prevent them and sometimes you can assist people to manage optimally within their limitations. You assess the patients, make the physiotherapeutic diagnoses, draw up plans for treatment, attend to patients and give them information, for instance about exercises and prevention. Everything you do focuses on the human being behind the disorder.

Masters degree

Masters degree

Having completed your Bachelor degree, you can also opt for a Master degree programme. This is a one-year to three-year study programme at a university of applied sciences or a research university. Hanze UAS offers the dual Master Physician Assistant. For many of our programmes, Hanze UAS offers a transfer route to enable students to progress without too much difficulty to the highly acclaimed University of Groningen (www.rug.nl), and vice versa. Examples of programmes for physiotherapy graduates are medicine, movement sciences, paediatrics, sports, manual therapy and acupuncture.
