Groninger visual arts stipends in a new guise

From 2023, two new Groninger visual arts stipends will be awarded to encourage the artistic development and cultural entrepreneurship of starting, promising visual artists. The stipends are the sequel to the George Verberg Stipend and the Hendrik de Vries Stipend, both of which have been awarded to young artistic talent for decades.

The cooperating parties the Municipality of Groningen, Kunstpunt Groningen and Minerva Art Academy value a qualitative support programme for the winning artists as part of the stipends. In this way, the stipends offer more sustainable support for the development of the artist's practice.

The two stipends each consist of an amount of € 20,000,- and are linked to support trajectories in which the artist's talent development is central. In doing so, the artist makes use of the network, expertise and facilities of the Noordenaars; a platform for presentation institutions in the Northern Netherlands consisting of 12 organisations.

A local and an international focus

The stipends both have their own orientation; the first stipend focuses on researching and making an impact in the local region. This can be done, for example, by addressing social and societal issues and/or by collaborating with local communities. The second stipend has an international orientation where the artist is encouraged to spread their wings and develop (part of) a project abroad. This trajectory starts in the North, and departs from a preliminary research to a location outside the Netherlands for a residency, collaboration or presentation, for example. At the end of the trajectory, the artist will return to the North, to share the results, experience and knowledge the artist has picked up with the local audience and the cultural field.

Applications

Eligible for the stipend are artists, aged 35 or younger, who are living and working in Groningen. The Open Call for both stipends will go out on 9 October. At that time, all criteria and procedures will also be available on this page. Artists who want to know more can visit the open-door consultation session held at Kunstpunt Groningen on Wednesday 11 October.

The new Groningen visual arts grants are a collaboration between the Municipality of Groningen, Minerva Art Academy (Hanze UAS) and Kunstpunt Groningen.
