Dr. Fons van der Lucht is Professor of Public Health and Healthy Ageing within the professorship of Healthy Ageing, Allied Health Care and Nursing.
In his research, he focuses on how people can grow older in good health in this ageing society. By 2040, a quarter of the Dutch population will be over 65 years old. That calls for new answers to big questions. Because how can we keep older people as healthy and vital as possible? And how do we ensure that they need to rely on care less often?
Professor Fons van der Lucht investigates how public health can contribute to this. He focuses on preventing (unnecessary) care, especially for older people with chronic conditions or complex problems who live at home. Within his research line, existing knowledge and new insights are brought together. Together with professionals and partners in the region, he develops practical solutions that contribute to more healthy years for older people. In this way, he explores opportunities in a field where there is still much to be gained.

In addition to his role as professor at the Hanze, Van der Lucht has been working at the RIVM since 1998. There, he has fulfilled various roles in the field of public health. For example, he was project leader of the Public Health Foresight Study 2010. Before joining the RIVM, Van der Lucht worked at the University of Groningen, where he obtained his PhD in 1992 on the topic of social inequality and health in children. A common thread throughout his career is applying knowledge by responding closely to questions from policy and practice.
