Artistic research explores, questions, and redefines art’s role and impact within broader societal contexts. Encounters in Artistic Research invites you to enter an open space where curious minds converge to shape the field in unexpected ways.
Whether you want to explore artistic research as a ‘love practice’ during the first day or are eager to learn more about how to navigate between making, writing and thinking on the second day – you will encounter imaginative and unexpected intersections between theories and practices, works of art and research.
Encounters in Artistic Research is organised by the Research Centre Art & Society (Hanze) and the Research Centre Arts in Society (University of Groningen).

For: Anyone interested in artistic research taking place within and around Minerva Art Academy
On the first day the focus is on artistic research as a "love practice", emphasising openness, vulnerability and trust, akin to love. This perspective will guide the encounters that will take place on this day on the key themes of art and care, art and technology, and art and rural areas. New insights on artistic research methods such as autoethnography, body-centered research, and material-based research will be shared.
For: Anyone interested in the theme of an Artistic PhD and the writing process it involves.
With: The PhD candidates in the Artistic PhD Programme of the University of Groningen & Hanze University of Applied Sciences and their international partners: University of the Arts (Bremen), and University of the Free State (Bloemfontein, South Africa).
During this day, artistic PhD candidates reflect together on how to write about their research. They share experiences and practices, pose questions and formulate ambitions through public dialogues. Researchers with experience in artistic PhD research respond.
Introduction + moderation: Jan van Boeckel (Hanze), Ann-Sophie Lehmann (RUG)
Respondent: Imogen Humphris (Hanze)
