‘Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone’
- Student stories
Tamika Ripepi is a student from South Africa and currently in her second year of Physiotherapy. It was a no-brainer for Tamika to choose the programme at Hanze in Groningen.
‘The programme itself has a great balance between practical and theoretical classes. Groningen is so lively, charming. It is the perfect environment for me to have both an international/intercultural experience and the opportunity to improve my Dutch and really integrate.’
‘A typical week usually includes lectures, practical and theory classes, internship (once a week for 3 weeks per block) as well as some group projects. There’s also time set aside for self-study, reflection, and assignments. It’s a good mix of structure and independence. I've definitely enjoyed anatomy and practical (PT Care) modules the most since I'm gaining confidence through practicing and improving my skills. But these skills are nothing without the clinical reasoning and understanding gained from theory classes and lectures. From the first year, we get a lot of hands-on experience. The theory is always linked to practice and based on a case, so I never feel like I'm studying something random.’
‘Lecturers and supervisors are approachable and always willing to support where needed. The educators in general really care about our progress and are always open to questions or discussions. We also receive personal feedback during/after practical classes and exams or internships, which definitely helps with gaining confidence in our skills. Even when I needed some guidance in finding my study-work-life balance, my academic counselor made the time to lend his support. So really in every aspect of student life, the support is there!’
'I've always been a sportsperson and find joy in being able to move, grow stronger and be healthy. That combined with my desire to help others and many trips to the physio myself (unfortunately the injuries are a part of contact sports) is what convinced me that this is a job I would truly enjoy and not feel stuck in.
I really felt a sense of accomplishment during my individual internship in the first year. I had a patient with a badly injured ankle. The whole process of doing the intake on day one, seeing the progress throughout the sessions, and eventually getting to the point where he was completely pain-free and even stronger than before was amazing. It was a great experience being able to help someone get back to doing what they enjoy.’
'If you’re passionate about movement, health, and helping others, it's definitely the programme for you! Be prepared to work hard and stay curious. The programme at Hanze is challenging but incredibly rewarding. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. You’ll grow so much, both academically and personally.'
